Subject: FAULT / FLAW. "Comments" DISAPPEARING, once AGAIN ...

Background:

Somewhat similar to what occurred a short while back ...

'Comments', in post, are 'literally' ... DISAPPEARING, once AGAIN ...

And ...

This has NOTHING to do, with just "Editing", the 'Comments' in posts ...

For the last few Days; even, more than a Week or so, I have noticed, that a number of my 'Comments', in posts, were 'literally' ... DISAPPEARING, once AGAIN ...

I was (and, had) NOT been trying to "Edit", the 'Comments', in the posts.

I was 'literally' just going back to relook at the posts; and, 'lo and behold', my 'Comment(s)', that HAD been posted, was NO WHERE to be 'seen' ... GONE.

I believe that this may have something to do with, "Image Moderation", with this Forum.

At first, I thought, it was because, I had too many "Images", in my 'Comment(s)'.

But, such did not 'seem' to be the case ...

Then, I thought, it was because, ONE "Image", in my 'Comment(s)', was "Denied", through "Image Moderation"; but, I DID NOT receive ANY 'Message', through this Forum, from the "Image Moderator", that ANY "Image", had been "Restricted"/"Denied".

This has happened, in a number of posts, over a number Days.

On one particular post, a number of days ago now, I had to literally FIGHT with the "System" for OVER x12 Hours; BEFORE, I finally got my 'Comment' posted.

At first my 'Comment', was posted in its entirety, with about x4 "Images"; then, it 'literally' ... DISAPPEARED ... Gone.

I had to eventually break up my 'Comment,' in "Parts"; and, even the, various "Parts" in the 'Middle', 'literally' ... DISAPPEARED ... Gone.

It took all afternoon/night (and, into the Early Hours of the NEXT Day); before, my 'Comment', in ALL its Parts (in order), finally stayed put.

But, I was NOT going to 'give-up'; and, be 'beaten' by the "System".

▬ I have a number of "Screenshots" of what transpired.

▬ I tried to keep a "Log" of the various 'Comments' that disappeared

.... [ but, I may have missed a few, in-between ... ]

Now ...

That Said ...

The latest occurrence was TODAY, just a few Minutes ago.

This time ...

I submitted a 'Comment', that was posted ... all good.

I noticed, I had omitted something, in my 'Comment'; so, reopened the post, to add the omission to by 'Comment' ... 'Lo and Behold' ... my 'Comment' had DISAPPEARED ...

I DID NOT even get the chance, to "Edit" my 'Comment'; as, it was, as if, it never existed.

So ...

Luckily, I STILL had a 'Tab', with my ORIGINALLY submitted 'Comment' open ...

So, I "Copied" and "Pasted"; as, a NEW "Comment', with what I had omitted added/included.

And, again, luckily, my SECOND attempt at a 'Comment' FINALLY stuck, in place.

Information:

So that the matter can be investigated ...

Here is the post; and, my FIRST 'Comment' that DISAPPEARED; and, my SECOND "Comment' that finally stuck, in place ...

I wanted to add here (prompted by @Brett . ), that I have had a post disappear 3 times from the discussion "Why would a birth place be displaying as the wrong country?" in Family Tree. I had taken a screen shot of the third attempt before clicking post, so when the third post also disappeared, I created a new post with just the screen shot. Guess what ... it worked. You can see a screen shot of what failed to post 3 times. I believe this is happening to others, because I get notifications that lead to a message something like "this post no longer exits". I assumed the person realized they knew the answer or something and deleted it, but I now suspect these were people having the same problem as I had. Reason I think that - people got notifications of my posts that never posted. It would be nice if you could figure this out and fix it! Thank you!

LOL I assume you mean mine in the "Why would a birth place be displaying as the wrong country?" I tried 4 times, and the 4th worked but the rest disappeared. I will try to delete them to save confusion if I see the dups coming in.

2 Dups appeared, but the first one I posted from the previous day never showed up. I deleted the dups. Now there shouldn't be too much confusion in "Why would a birth place be displaying as the wrong country?"

I've also had them disappear, today, at least twice, and earlier in the week. I have started keeping a screen shot of my comments, so I don't have the reinvent the wheel every time.

This new platform needs an overhaul.

    @Brett .

    Hi Brett

Yes, I tried to read one of your posts (in the "early hours" here in the UK) and assumed you had deleted it.

I believe it's back now (along will a number of other posts that "disappeared" earlier), but I would hope Mark or a colleague will acknowledge / investigate the problem. Just when I thought it was safe to enter my comments here directly (instead of doing a copy/paste from Word) I feel apprehensive again.

This is BOTH, quite ODD; and, somewhat CONCERNING ...

I was just watching to 'see', if another User's/Patron's 'Comment', WITH an "Image", DISAPPEARED ...

'Lo and Behold' ... it DID NOT ...

    That was rather ODD ...

    But ...

    That Said ...

What was CONCERNING was, that the 'Comment', was that of a "Moderator" [ ie. 'FamilySearch' "Support" (Personnel)].

Admittedly, ONLY "One" (x1) "Image" was involved ...

    Now ...

    That Said ...

So that begs the 'Question' ... Are "Moderators", above reproach; and/or, IMMUNE, from this problem/issue?

[ Or, are just we (the) 'lowly' Users/Patrons, forced to suffer this problem/issue? ]

    Please advise ...

Humbly submitted for your IMMEDIATE, information; attention; and, consideration.

    'Thank You' in advance.

Your cooperation, would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards

MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU IN THIS IMPORTANT WORK

    Yours Faithfully,

    Brett

ps: I have "Screenshot(s)", with the respective "Time(s)'; and, the URL of the respective 'Comment'.

Here is a TWO for ONE ...

    ==========

    PART 1

    FYI

And, it CONTINUES ... Still, yet, once again, Another EXAMPLE ...

Same, Same ... again ... TODAY ... this evening ...

8:41 pm; and, 8:47 pm, Tuesday, 7 December 2021, my Local 'Time' is currently UTC +11 Hours.

Just as the previous occurrence(s) ...

I submitted a 'Comment', that was 'posted' ... all good.

[ That INCLUDED Two (x2) "Images"; plus, x1 URL of "Collection"; &, x1 URL of "Research Wiki" page/screen ... ]

This time, NOTHING, was omitted; but, the "Images", were originally "Pending", subject to "Image Moderation" (ie. "Hour Glass" Icon).

I decided, to open the whole 'post', in a NEW 'Tab"; and, "Refresh" every so often, to keep on 'eye' on things; and, at 8:43 pm ( within 2 Minutes, this time ); then, ... 'Lo and Behold' ... my WHOLE 'Comment' had DISAPPEARED ... GONE ... vanished without a trace ...

And, again, I had NOT even tried, to "Edit" my 'Comment'.

Although, despite that, I "Noticed", when I went to make an "Image", of a "Screenshot", that when the "Images" were subject to "Image Moderation", in that FIRST 'Comment', such indicated, that the 'Comment', was "Edited", when, in fact, it was NOT.

It was, as if, it never existed.

    So ...

    Again ...

Here is the post; and, my FIRST 'Comment' that DISAPPEARED; and, my SECOND "Comment' that finally stuck, in place ...

    All

    FYI

    'Heads-Up' ...

Maybe someone, in 'FamilySearch', is actually 'listening' ...

I posted a 'Comment' this morning (ie. My 'Local' Time, Friday, 9 December 2021, UTC +11 Hours), with an "Image"; and, for the FIRST time in MANY 'Days' (even, 'Weeks'), the 'Comment' DID NOT "Disappear" ...

    And, it STUCK ...

[ Note: That was a very small post, with ONLY One "Image" ... ]

    And ...

There was STILL the 'spurious' indication, that the 'Comment' was "Edited", when, in fact, it was NOT "Edited".

    But ... Hey ...

At least, that is a 'Start' ... ie. at least, the 'Comment', DID NOT just DISAPPEAR ...

Certainly BETTER than what we have had, with regard to submitting 'Comments', with "Images", of late ...

The problem/issue of the DISAPPRING 'Comments'; especially, with "Images", was occurring; as, last as LAST "Night", my 'Local' Time, Thursday, 8 December 2021, UTC +11 Hours.

Lets hope, that problem/issue, is ALMOST addressed/fixed.

    Brett

ps: NOW, we ONLY have to find out about ... "Your comment will appear after it is approved."

    Addendum:

This is exciting ... two for two ... my second 'Comment', with an "Image', that DID NOT 'Disappear" ...

    Hello Brett,

My name is Piper and I'm a new community moderator here. We figured out what the issue was and fixed it. You should be good to go now. If I'm wrong, let me know and I'll dig in deeper.

    Cheers!

    @Piper Wilson

    Piper

    Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.

    I am just a 'lowly' User/Patron ...

[ And, the one who raised this post ... ]

Question: Are you just a "Moderator" [ ie. 'FamilySearch' "Support" ( Personnel ) ].

    [ ie. Assigned to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum ... ]

Or, are you part of either,

    (1) the "Design"/"Development" Team; or,

    (2) the "Programmers"/"Engineers", of 'FamilySearch'?

    As an aside ...

IF, you have not; THEN, please read my recent 'Comment':

    https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/comment/412181#Comment_412181

As, there is STILL the 'spurious' indication, that the 'Comment' was "Edited", when, in fact, it was NOT "Edited".

    So ...

    That Said ...

In answer to your query ... "Partially" ... addressed/fixed ...

    But ...

    That Said ...

NOW, the WHOLE matter, is being exacerbated (and, complicated); where, there is the problem/issue of:

"Your comment will appear after it is approved."

And, 'Comments', NOT being posted; and, going to one's "Drafts".

[ And, is SOME cases, appears HOUR; or, DAYS (even, WEEKS), later; or, NOT; but, STILL in one's "Drafts" ... ]

Please refer to this post of mine:

    Furthermore ...

I would suspect, that these matters, would be quite challenging, to FULLY understand, for someone NEW, to this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum; as, the likes of such problems/issue, have been occurring, 'on and off', in various form, for some time.

    Good Luck.

I wish you all the best, with trying to get you 'bearing', on ALL of this.

    Hello again,

Thank you for the welcome. I am here for the community. Thank you for the background reading. It will be useful. As you said, it's going to take a while for me to get my bearings, but I'll get myself up to speed as soon as I can.

For transparency, I may not always be able to answer your questions for many different reasons; running a community is more complicated than it appears. However, we will always hear you and try to respond as soon as we can.

    I hope that helps.

    Piper

I am more that well aware, how complicated things are ...

I have been helping/assisting in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, for a number of Years ...

And, I have been participating in the MANY various 'iterations', of the "Feedback" Forums, in 'FamilySearch', for even MANY more Years.

Hence, my latter reference, in my previous 'Comment' ...

    Good Luck ...

    In ALL of this ...

ps: I DO NOT envy your task ...
