The highest is 376 and 2nd highest is 127. I contacted the 376 but she doesn’t recognize the name Lois Kilby.

376 is an excellent match. Please see if she will share her family history with you. Can you find her on Ancestry or Facebook? Copy everything that you can that might tell you about her immediate family and ancestry. Check out this chart from DNAPainter.com This chart will show you what her probable relationship is to you:

That’s a nice site. Tried advanced searching: Oklahoma, Oklahoma Children’s Home Finding Society, and Oklahoma Children’s Home Society. 0 matches however the July 29, 1916 newspaper is there so the advanced search apparently didn’t pick up the phrases.

Look about half way down the page of the center column. The headline "Proceedings of the board...."
This isn't the answer to your question, but it could be an important clue.

That’s where I first found her. She, too, was an orphan searching for her parents.

This article from 1919 warns of confusion of names concerning the Oklahoma Children's Society. This might help clarify things when we search.

@Jim Kilby chronicling America is a good site, I’ve found this one to be quite useful when doing Oklahoma research. There is an article here about your uncle Willie, James Franks brother ...

Willie Kilby died on way to France 1920

Try using your search terms in quotes - "Oklahoma Children's Home" or try with names - "Lois Kilby" or perhaps use the "Lois Bingham" that x24mom suggested. You might try looking for information about family members. I have found news articles, marriages, obituaries and many more useful articles or announcements in the news for families that I have researched at chroniclingamerica.loc.gov
You can narrow your search down to the time period that is of interest for you, and also the state you wish to research. If people are involved in a story that might have been picked up by other newspapers, you can search wider than the immediate state.

@X24mom and @Carolyn Webber In trying to find out exactly where the girls were located, I called the Historical Society again. The contact says the girls were in Guthrie. However, the homes in Guthrie were 1) Oklahoma Masonic Home and 2) Saint Catherine’s School. She said the girls were not at the Masonic Home. Oklahoma City lists a Children’s Home Society. But, she is going by what it said on the box donated. She is again going through the box to see if there are any letterheads showing where the home actually was. I thought that, since Josephine's probate was in Oklahoma County, the home was located there but the Handy's (the adopting parents) lived in Oklahoma City at the time. So, I don't know if the probate was filed there because that's were the adopting parents lived or where Josephine lived. Confused.

One of the newspaper articles that I sent you yesterday was a comment about the Oklahoma Childrens Home Society taking in the children from the county. https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn86090528/1915-02-18/ed-1/seq-4/#date1=1915&index=0&rows=20&words=Children+Oklahoma+Society&searchType=basic&sequence=0&state=Oklahoma&date2=1919&proxtext=oklahoma+childrens+society&y=0&x=0&dateFilterType=yearRange&page=1
This was in the news article dated: 2/18/ 1915.
I know that this article may have been lost in this huge chain. Maybe we need to break the chain and start asking individual questions in different threads?

According to this, there is no home listed in Guthrie in 1916.

In 1916 there is no home listed in Guthrie.

Perhaps, we have been too selective. Maybe the girls were admitted to another Children's Home prior to being placed at the Oklahoma Children's Home Society. Perhaps, we need to look for earlier records in some of the other homes. What do you think?

The Decree of Adoption says she was given up July 10, 1916 and placed with the Oklahoma Children's Home Society who then is authorized to find a suitable home.

I had better check with my nephew @John JohnRigler1 first.

Thank you so much for that. I know nothing about him. I do have a picture in a round frame of him in his WW1 uniform on his way to fight. He never came back. I always thought he died in battle. The article says he died from pneumonia.

- Ok...@Jim Kilby @John JohnRigler1 @Carolyn Webber so before I realized it was ok city and not Guthrie, I had put in a request with the Logan County Gen society. A very nice lady named Nelda Brown responded.she sent me the info she was able to gather, some of it we already knew, and some 🤷🏻♀️i dont know🤷🏻♀️ if anyone here knew or not .. so this is what she sent:
KELBY RESEARCH. Nothing in Logan County, Oklahoma.
Timeline:
- 1890 23(26) June: James F Kilby born in Arkansas [son of William C. and Liddie Kilby; see 1900 Census Noble, Cleveland Co., OK. William born GA, Liddie born TN; James F., age 9 born AR, brother William age 8 born AR, sister Lovenice age 6 born AR, and Thomas age 3 born in OK]
- 1907 4 Oct: Mae Bingmanand Jas F Kilby married Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma
- 1910 Census, taken 19 Apr 1910: James Killey and May Killey, living in Stuart Township, Hughes Co., Oklahoma. It shows they were married 2 years with 1 child: Charles, age 1-2/12 (born Feb 1909). Interestingly, in the adjoining household were James Kilby’s two brothers “Willie and Tomas” and they were listed as “step sons”. The head of household was Tomas Davis (married 1 time) and Liddia (married 3 times). This couple had been married 6 years & she listed 8 children with 6 living. So, this “Lidia” was Liddie Kilby (James’ mother).
- 1911 (?) Birth of Lois Kilby(presumably Pottawatomie County, OK)
- 1912 23 Sep: “Son Kilby”: Unmarked grave in Tecumseh Cemetery, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, plot 1-19-3-W-1 (from Find-A-Grave). There is no name or other identifying information. Could this be a son of James and May – maybe Charles?
- 1913 ?) Birth of Josephine Kilby (presumably Pottawatomie County, OK)
- 1916 Divorce between Mae and James Kilby. Suggest checking Pottawatomie County Court Clerk for details of the divorce. There may be references to the name of the Children’s Home – if that was decided at the time of the divorce.
- 1916 Girls Lois (age 5?) and Josephine (age 3?) placed in Children’s Home per your message. Question is which Children’s Home?
- 1918-1919 WWI Army Enlistment: James Kilby. Army. Enlistment date 21 May 1918, Release date 22 Jan 1919.
- 1920 Census. James Kilby is living in his brother Thomas and Ella’s household. He is listed as Divorced, age 26, at Forest Township, Pottawatomie Co., Oklahoma.
- 1920 July 23 Willie Kilbydied, WWI, heading to France, developed pneumonia and died. Buried in Mission Cemetery. James Kelly’s brother. See The County Democrat, Tecumseh, Oklahoma, July 23, 1920.
- 1930 Census. James F. Kilby and Bethel Kilby are living in Forest Township, Pottawatomie Co., OK. A daughter Vencil Kilby, born in Texas, age 15, is listed. This must be Bethel’s child since the date of birth would be in 1915. It likely should have been listed as step-daughter to James. He is listed as a farmer.
- 1930 Birth of Ella Sue Kilby, in OK. Daughter of J.T. and Bethel Kilby. (See 1940 census)
- 1930 City Directory. Joseph (not James) F. Kilby and Bethel Kilby are listed on W. Washington in Shawnee, Oklahoma, with Joseph as spouse, working as a constable.
- 1940 Census. J.T. Kelby and Bethel Kelby are living in Forest Township, Pottawatomie Co., OK. It shows they were living in same house on April 1, 1935; however, also listed is a daughter, Ella Sue Kelby, born OK, age 10, but living in Pryor, Mayes Co., OK on April 1, 1935.
- 1942 WWII Draft Registration Card. James Franklin Kilby, residence place is Tecumseh, Oklahoma. His wife’s name is listed as Bethel & it states he was born in Montgomery, Arkansas.
- 1946 25 June: Bethel Aurora Haggard Kilby died. She is buried at Tecumseh Cemetery, Tecumseh, Pottawatomie Co., OK. See Find-A-Grave, photo of Bethel and of her stone.
- 1956 16 Nov: James Franklin Kilby died. See Find-A-Grave for photo of his stone and other details. On the Application for a Headstone for Military Veterans, Minnie Kilby is the person listed as making application. He is buried at Tecumseh Cemetery, Pottawatomie County, OK.
- (Minnie Mae Bandy Kilby had previous spouses George Marion Dowell and Terrell Dunn). The Social Security Applications and Claims Index shows the following: May 1937: Name listed as Minnie Mae Dunn; July 1955: Name listed as Minnie May Kilby; 24 Mar 1977: Name listed as Minnie Mae Kilby; 29 Sep 2000: Name listed as Minnie M Kilby.) She was born 25 Mar 1910; died 24 Sep 2000. Her father was listed as William R. Bandy and mother Lue I Zachery.)
- Here are a couple of resources you can explore. It may help!
- http://ok2explore.health.ok.gov Under the Births section, I found 9 Kilby’s, 5 of which were in Pottawatomie County. There is a Virginia here born May 19, 1917. I couldn’t match up any with Lois. There is one named Ethel Milendea, born 1916 & the other female was born Mary Pauline in 1920. I don’t know who they are. Note that Oklahoma statehood was in 1907 and it was not until around 1912 that births & deaths were required to be registered at the State level. Otherwise, you may be able to find more information at the COUNTY level. Suggest you contact a genealogy site that deals with Pottawatomie County. They may be able to help.
Best of luck. I don't believe I can help you further on this Kilby research, but maybe you can find something more with the suggestions.

Yes that’s understandable, and if he’s not comfortable with that it’s totally understandable. But if he’s ok with it, it may give us more clues that could prove helpful

It was filed in Ok city because that’s where the adopting parents lived. I know this because my grandfather was in Oklahoma City, but his adoptive parents lived in Marshal, Logan Coutny.. so his records are in Guthrie. And when they adopted her daughter, she was also in OK city, the adopting parents lived in Covington,Garfield County... so I found her records in Garfield County Probate Records. The records will be where the adopting parents lived at the time

That’s some great stuff. Ella Sue was adopted by James F. and Bethel. I was in touch with her until her death. That’s the first I have ever heard of Vencil. The entry: 1930 City Directory. Joseph (not James) F. Kilby and Bethel Kilby are listed on W. Washington in Shawnee, Oklahoma, with Joseph as spouse, working as a constable.......Must be my father. He was a policeman at the time of his death.

X24mom...did you see my post where we don’t know where the home was located. Could have been OKC or Guthrie.

It certainly wouldn't hurt.

I agree @Carolyn Webber I sent her a quick email asking where orphan children were buried when they died at the orphanage/homes because I wanted to research that possibility she responded with a couple of questions about who I was searching for and why, so I told her what we were doing, and that was her response. I then sent her the article and photos that @Jim Kilby shared here. She’s super nice and helpful! This was her response :
Oh, my goodness! The article and photo & listing were precious. I notices that Josephine was adopted by "R. L. Handy in Oklahoma County." That's great news for following up. Likely her name was changed to HANDY. Check 1920 & maybe 1930 census for the HANDY family in Oklahoma County! I can't wait to send this so I can see if I can find her!!!
