Lois was born in 1910 and would have been over 100 in 2013. The document also lists Roger Kilby. If Roger were her son then he would have to be going by his mother's maiden name if this is Lois Kilby.

The person I spoke to at the Carnegie Library in Guthrie was speaking of the Fraternal Masons. When I phoned the Masons Children Foundation they seemed to know what I was talking about.

My nephew, John, knows more about his mother than I. I invited him to login as me so he can see this string. However, he will say it's John posting or replying.

John is welcome to create his own FamilySearch account. I look forward to hearing what he has to say. Your question has created quite a flurry of action. I am really impressed with how others reach out to help find answers. All of us have different experiences and use different research techniques. I love it when the community works together to help.

James f Kilby draft registration lists someone named BETHEL KILBY as person who will always know where he is. And he lived in the town of Tecumseh? Pottowami County Ok

I guess we haven't ruled out that there is a connection between the two homes or the Mason's.

Find a grave also shows him buried in Tecumseh.... someone left flowers for him. His WWI draft reg is curious though ... it’s dated feb 1917 and he listed himself as a farmer wirh a wife and 2 children... if the girls were in the home in 1916... are these the same children he’s referring to?

OK maybe I have the wrong guy... this james Frank Kilby had a wife named Bethel and a 15 year old daughter named Voncile in 1930 Census

I think children often assumed the last name of a step-parent. It wasn't like today when we have to prove our identity, I think that it was a bit easier to change names to just match the pattern of the rest of the family. I have an ancestor that was listed as "adopted" on the 1880 Census. She did not change her name, but I have seen other instances where the children in the family all assume the new step-dads name before the next census. On the previous census, they were listed with their bio fathers surname, but ten years later they have the same surname as their step-father. This name change happened with adopted children too.

And it looks like May married CD DAVIS in Dec 1917

Yes, She is F (Female) W (White) 9 (age) S (Single)
However, this is just one of the girls named Lois that you will find if you do a search using these keywords:
Lois, (no last name)
1911 (birth),
Oklahoma (birthplace)
and adding the keyword 'adopted' and making sure that you require an exact match to adopted.
Did you see the image of my keyword search? It should show in this thread as a gray form. I showed the keyword search for adoption with "exact" highlighted in yellow.

I noticed this same information on this draft form. This is a good example of why it is useful to do a surname study in a particular area. The only way to potentially eliminate any of the Kilby families in this area is to research them. As you learn more about each Kilby family that you find, you will possibly find reasons why this cannot be the individuals that you are searching for. However, there are at least three Kilby men that registered for the Draft in this area. How are they related?

Jim, Thanks for sharing this information! Have you researched the Handy family? Sometimes, children were adopted by extended family.

I built an account. How do I join y’all?

Yes, my nephew knows all about the Handy family. He is going to join the group so he can provide more info.

Oh my! This file certainly looks like it has potential. Can you send a link to this record!
0 -
That's Josephine Kilby. She was adopted by the Handy family.

Jim, it looks like you found your way in! Thanks for joining us. We have a lively discussion going on. @X24mom X24mom may have just posted a link to the adoption for Joe! I am so excited!

Bethel was my father's 4th wife. I was raised in Tecumseh.
0 -
I believe so. They were given up in July 1916.
0 -
I believe that's my father James Franklin Kilby and his 4th wife was named Bethel. Never heard of Voncile, that's a new one.

@X24mom X24mom Can you try searching this probate index and only use the first name Lois? Either leave the surname blank, or try using a wildcard. Sometimes, you can search with the letter A*, B*, C*, etc. until you stumble upon a record that matches. I am not sure if this explanation makes sense. I can clarify if needed.

It has a case number 2911 so apparently every adoption should be listed in this type record. One would think that later Lois Kilby would be listed with a case number.

Can a relative, me, get access to a restricted file like this?

I have seen many instances where women have released their children and married someone else. It makes me sad to think that the new husband would not accept their children. Sometimes families released children to orphanages and hoped to get them back. Some times they were required to pay for the care that their children had received. If they were unable to pay for their past care, they might not be allowed to get their children back.

I would not ask about an adoption file. I would ask for a probate file.
You can see probate files for Oklahoma. Look here: https://www.familysearch.org/frontier/search-bifrost/image/index?owc=https://www.familysearch.org/service/cds/recapi/collections/2063710/waypoints
These files will be sorted by county. I don't know if they are indexed. Some times you have to just keep poking in the files to see if they are sorted by date, town, or if there is an index at the beginning or the end of the files.

I would start here in the index for the K section. I think that this is the right time period: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L97P-KZR6?i=42&wc=M74P-XWP%3A353806801%2C354349201&cc=2063710

Or maybe there is a different section that will show the actual probate record. I didn't see the name Kilby in the Index. Should we be searching Pottawatomie or Logan County?
