"Add Spouse" Button is grayed out and can't click on it.

I had a patron come in tonight with a problem I have never seen before. The computer will not let him add a spouse to his tree. The "Add Spouse" button is grayed out. When you hover your mouse over it, the pointer turns into a red circle with a line through it, and you can't click on it. The same is true for the "Add Children" button. You can add spouses and children to other profiles on his tree, but his profile, the root profile, cannot have any spouses or children added. This happens both on the tree view and the details view. He has a non-LDS account, but I don't think that should matter. I have been on non-LDS accounts before and had no problem adding spouses and children. What causes this problem and how can it be fixed?

For his profile, is the sex set to male, or is it unspecified? The sex must be male or female before a person can be in a relationship as a spouse or parent.

He was visiting from out of state so I referred him to familysearch support and his local familysearch center. But now I know what to check for next time, thanks.
