So called "locked Records"
Hi, I recently hired someone in Sicily to help with finding my Grandparents marriage record in Italy. I gave him all the information that I had found at family search, and he said that he has a friend that has access to the "Locked Files" at Family search. And sure enough, this friend found some good leads that I could not access myself on family search. Is their away to access these files myself at a LDS center near me??
Thank you

Most of the Italian/Sicilian records are available at either a Family History Center or Affiliate Library. Many FHCs are still closed or open only by appointment, at least in my area. But, my local public library is an Affiliate, and I can access those records at the library.
You can check where records are viewable by clicking on that locked symbol - you'll see a pop-up about availability.

Hi, The FHC by me in Westlake Ohio is open, but I was getting the same results there as at home. When I asked the volunteers there, they had no idea about how to access these other files. I read something about using the FHC "Portal" when on their computers. Thank you

Mike, it's possible that your FHC has not updated their access. There's a new extension that has to be installed on the center's computers. And you have to use the center computers - not your own laptop. That's a recent change.

Mike,
If you want to share what it is you are looking for, I can check on my next visit to my affiliate library. I go about once a week, and I keep a running list of things I need to look for. If you have an affiliate nearby, that's easier than most FHCs, which have more limited hours. And you can still use your laptop at affiliates. Many public library systems are now affiliates.

Thank you for the offer, I have Family Search Center very near me, (with the limited hours). At this time my search is very wide and I need to narrow it down and also look for clues. I'm looking for marriage records but the span could be from around 1890-1900 and 4 possible communes. I plan on going back this Wednesday with the "portal" information that I now know about and hopefully I will be able to access and have some success.

I can always verify if the communes you want are available at an affiliate - all affiliates have the same access. If you need any assistance after you check out the portal, you only have to ask. One of my good genie friends is a Miceli descendant, so I've done quite a bit of digging for her.
