Difference between Displayed Place Name and "Standardized" Place Name Continues to Cause Confusion
Since I continue to run into people confused by the dual place name data entry used in Family Tree and who are convinced all place names must be "standardized," could the place name entry boxes be modified in some way to clarify intended practice? One though I have is to do something like this:
Having the explanation of what goes in each field should help people realized the two fields do not have to be the same and to realized that the words of the standardized value are just an easier to read version of latitude and longitude than having numbers.
Just the other day I spent half an hour restoring place names. Someone had wasted both his time and mine in going through and changing names like "Vikanes, Stord, Hordaland, Norway," "Eldøy, Stord, Hordaland, Norway," and "Dale, Stord, Hordaland, Norway," all to just "Stord, Hordaland, Norway" in the name of "standardization."
Early in Family Tree when the Place field and the Standardized Event Place field were both always present, it was a bit easier to convince people that these are two separate data items. Now when they happen to look the same, there is just one field which I am concerned leads people to think there should always be just one field.
