Hungarian Passport Records c. 1905
My great-grandfather Hungary in 1905 (and came to the US). I am trying to establish citizenship claims for my cousins, and possibly myself. Unfortunately, we do not have his passport. I plan to write to the Hungarian National Archive to see if they have a copy.
Has anyone tried obtaining passports from that era? Any advice? The list of databases does not appear to include passport or foreign ministry records: http://www.archivportal.hu/en/description-of-databases/combined-databases/
It's also possible that he would have gotten his passport in Cisleithania, as he may have been living in the Austrian part of the Empire, so I may also write to the Austrian archives if the Hungarian archives don't have anything.
One living cousin does speak Hungarian well enough to write to the archives, if that will make things easier.
Also does anyone know what the standard A-H passport term was at that time?
Here's why I ask (from a Hungarian consulate webpage): "Those, who left Hungary before September 1st, 1929 could loose their citizenship by living continuously abroad for a period exceeding 10 years. This 10 year period began after the expiry date in the person's last Hungarian passport. Therefore, in this case, a Hungarian official document (e.g. a passport, a written declaration made in a Hungarian Consulate, etc.) must be produced which would prove that the person kept his/her citizenship."
So which of my cousins inherited Hungarian citizenship depends on knowing when his passport expired.
Thank you!

It's entirely possible that your great grandfather entered the USA without a passport or visa. There were few requirements or limitations that early.

I wonder if a moderator would be able to move this thread to the "Austro-Hungarian Empire" group, where it belongs? (This category is for communication in Hungarian.) But maybe someone here has some advice, so I'll summarize the question.

Sorry, the first sentence got garbled. I meant to say: My great-grandfather was born in Hungary in 1880 and came to the US in/around 1905.
