Hi Douglas
When you click the change focus person on the left, it should display all the names listed on the source document you are working with.
Names on the left with green background means the source for that person has been attached to a record in Family Search. White means it has not been attached.
Names on the right with green background means the source you are working with has been attached to this person. White means the source has not been attached to this person.

Answer to Q1.
On the source linker, the people are listed according to their relationship to a focus person. The focus person is listed with his or her spouse. Parents appear in a section above, children and siblings in the sections below.
Some historical records identify in-laws, grandparents, grandchildren, and other family members who are not displayed on the right side of the screen. To deal with these family members, you change the focus person.
For example, a marriage record might list the bride and groom and each of their parents. When you first display the source linker, the bride may be the focus person. When you are ready to work on the husband’s information, make him the focus person instead.

Answer to Q2. white background means that person on the left is not attached to the person on the right yet. If the green background runs from left person to right person means it is attached between the two persons.
If only the left person is green and the right person is white background, you need to change the focus person on the left to get the one on the right to compare and vice versa.
If you see green on the left person and white on the right person, and there is a triangle with the detach icon, the left person is attached to someone else in another tree. You need to research the other person and see if it is correctly attached to the right person.
