This is an error in the indexed birth registrations - FamilySearch uses a copy of the indexed birth registrations from FindMyPast.
Interestingly - FreeBMD and Ancestry - in their indexing of this entry - both leave the second character of the surname blank. Clearly there is an underlying problem with the recorded GRO registration index.
FindMyPast do offer a correction service from their web site when displaying the record - so you can make your case - possibly also offer the marriage details of the Avery and Foster parents concerned.
However, there is no assurance that the correction to FindMyPast will find its way back to the version used by FamilySearch - in which case, I would recommend adding a note the attached FS birth registration source that simply states that the surname Foster of the mother has been incorrectly indexed as Faster in the initial FindMyPast indexing of this record.
Using the Source Linker in FamilySearch will simply attach the "Faster" name from the registration record to the "Foster" named mother.
It can be quite common to attach mis-spelt or spelling variations on source records to individuals with a more accepted spelling of a name.0 -

David Newton said: No it isn't. The correct transcription of that mother's maiden name is F?ster. The second character is totally obscured and thus should be replaced with a single character wildcard. No indexer should have transcribed that as either Faster or Foster.0

Jeff Wiseman said: That's right. It could have been incorrectly transcribed with ANY vowel for that matter. Since it is obvious that a character is missing, the single character wildcard "?" should have been used. That would enable the search engines to find it easier.
Note that in the typed birth registrations, they are typically taken from the original hand written ones. It may be possible to find the missing vowel that way :-)0
