Welcome to the FamilySearch feedback forum at GetSatisfaction.com. I am not an employee but we are told that all messages are read (but are frequently not replied to by employees)
What you are seeing is one of the "Campaign" type messages that are very common from FS. They basically just inform you of a hint that has been associated with one of your potential ancestors. In my case I almost always find that the source has already been attached. You do have the ability to turn the message off if you want.
But to answer your question, the attaching of sources to individuals in the FamilySearch FamilyTree must always be done by humans. There are far too many possibilities of errors for the computer system to make and implement those decisions by itself without human intervention.0
