Correcting Cemetery Name

Thomas A Severn said: "Yampa Cemetery" is actually "South Routt Cemetery." The FindaGrave cemetery page has a clear picture of the sign at the entrance.
I enquired about the discrepancy at the Yampa General Store, and the elderly proprietor confirmed the name of the cemetery and explained that there was indeed confusion about the name, fueled by the name of the district and its location near Yampa.
The editors of FindaGrave have made the change.

A lot depends upon where you are seeing this problem.
If it is in the index, corrections that happen in Find a Grave are not immediately reflected in the Find a Grave - supplied index on FamilySearch. Eventually, the corrected entry will appear in the Find a Grave - supplied index on this site.
If the name appears in the massive tree, that is something that you can correct by editing the entry. You may need to also report the problem via email to the standards team at placefeedback@familysearch.org if the error appears as a standard place.0 -

Dan Reeves said: Thanks for alerting us to this issue. We have corrected the display name for the cemetery to "South Routt Cemetery." We have retained "Yampa Cemetery" as an alternate.

Tom Huber said: Retaining a name is a good practice because I've found that any given cemetery can be known under different name over time.
Even though a cemetery may have a sign giving its officially recognized name, that hasn't stopped those filling out death certificates to record the same cemetery with a different name.
That's been my experience with these things.0 -
Jeff Wiseman said: Cemetery names constantly change, especially if they are located on private property. The name can frequently inherit the name of the owners.
Technically, the name of the cemetery at the time of burial is the one that should be recorded in the burial event vital and is usually included in the death certificate. That is the true cemetery name of the burial event.
However, if/when the name changes later, that is frequently the (current) name used by sites like find a grave. People seem to prefer the Find a Grave location names to the location name during the event. To me it doesn't make much difference as long as the alternate names exist in the places database.0 -
Tom Huber said: Hi Jeff,
Find a Grave's site used to provide a list of alternative names that a given cemetery was known as. The new Find a Grave user interface (introduced last year) no longer shows an detailed information about a cemetery... at least, as far as I can determine.0 -
Jeff Wiseman said: That's interesting. Although my trust in Find a grave records is limited to just the pictures of headstones and the names/locations of the cemeteries (which tend to be contemporary names only), I do have an interest in maintaining the alternates in our places database. That way we will have visibility to them all through FS tools.0

Bright Roxie said: Please consider changing Southview Cemetery, Lincoln Park, Upson, Georgia, US (See ID# L1F3-WCN) back to it’s original FamilySearch name Southview Cemetery, Upson, Georgia, US (See ID# L5DN-6N3. Family members that were entered in the past are showing up in Upson, GA which is correct. The newest family members being added are showing up in Lincoln Park, Upson, GA which is incorrect.
I grew up in Thomaston. I have family members buried in Southview Cemetery and I am familiar with the neighborhoods in that area. Southview Cemetery is located near the Lincoln Park community, but it is not in the community. It is not located in any specific community of Thomaston, Upson, GA. It is located on a main road that goes through the south of town.
Is there a way for the system to correct the location for all of the entries that everyone has been made to use recently with Lincoln Park in them?0 -
