Justin Masters said: I'm summarizing this from the 2020 Rootstech conference given by Todd Powell titled "FamilySearch App for Intermediate/Advanced Users" found at https://www.rootstech.org/video/famil...
The feature will be listed, as well as the time index in which it appears in the video.
There will be references to "three dots" (horizontally - for iOS) and "hamburger" (or three horizontal lines placed above each other in a stack, for Android).
These are key menu selection items from the main menu.
Android and iOS also have three dots, seen on the individual pages near the top. This is not the main menu, but is used for other local functions.
First off, kudos to the mobile app development team! It's a lot to do with a small form factor!
==========================
Enabling multiple screens in the mobile app (19:08)
From the main menu, select the 3 dots (iOS) or hamburger (Android) and
go to Settings,
scroll to the bottom of preferences and turn on "Enable Multiple Screens" option.
iOS
Press multiple box icon to go to/create new screen (max 5 screens)
If you want to add a window, hit the "+" character in a circle to create an additional window. (max 5 screens)
Swipe left/right to see/jump to screens
Android
Use "hamburger" (three stacked horizontal lines (upper left - not shown in video)
Same steps as above, but multiple screens show up on top
Pressing that pops up the option to see/create multiple screens (max 5 screens)
Hit the "+" to create a window (max 5 screens)
Swipe up/down on Android between screens.
================================
Enable Fan Chart View (instead of traditional pedigree chart) (24:39)
IOS is shown here, but swap the hamburger (upper left) for the three dots shown here for Android.(labeled "1"),
Select where it shows sliders (labeled "2") for selecting the number of generations.
To enable Fan Chart View
select menu (labeled "1", again hamburger on Android),
Select Settings
Neat the top of the preferences, select "Enable Fan Chart View"
When done, go back to Tree screen, select the sliders in the circle (Labeled "2")
to pick the number of generations desired. (OOPS, incorrect, see top of screen, with pull-down menu)
You can zoom in/out as you normally do for each platform. (spreading of fingers for android, unknown how to do this on iOS)
==========================
See tasks for descendants (26:16)
Select a person on the fan chart or pedigree chart to go to an individual page (suggested about 5-6 generations back)
iOS shown, but similar for Android (3 dots vertical)
You can select the number of generations down to show tasks for (attach record hints, errors, etc) (top of screen)
Record hints to be attached will show (blue icons), errors, etc
There's a HIDDEN BONUS screen in here as well!
If you PRESS AND HOLD any of the names here, and you get additional options
You can View Details, View Relationship (to you), or Open (that person) in a New Window.
A suggested tactic is to open a person in a new window to see their details and scroll across the various screens to get to know them, and then come back and open the hint.
This way you can slide back and forth between the hint screen and the personal info screen.
====================
Brief discussion about difference in Source Linker on mobile platform (Source on the left), and ability to edit respective fields (pencil icon on far right to edit that field - not seen on the web, but is coming) (30:41)
Scroll down to bottom to attach record. (possibly only attaching one person per record?)
====================
Possible Duplicates (33:35 - Also picks back up at 39:05)
Can use this item to look for possible duplicates
====================
Record Helps (go to fan chart - seen above) (38:03)
Use the sliders icon (circled in Red). They call it "Filters"
You'll get a horizontal scrolling screen (scroll to the right by swiping left)
Find "Research Helps"
You'll come back to the fan chart and see colors for people having Record Hints or with possible duplicates.
Following Duplicates color can lead you to managing duplicates and merging them.
While merging, you might find more duplicates for later work.
If Merge is looking bad or good, actions are at the bottom of the screen (scroll down to see)
at 41:40, Todd speaks to the web version of merging as swapping of Right to Left for deleted person for a merge to Left to Right (as seen currently in Beta)
=====================
Ancestors with Tasks (42:33) (seen as Tasks at the bottom of the screen in iOS. Android users select the hamburger icon and choose Ancestors with Tasks)
Goes up 6 generations and Includes children and spouses of your direct ancestors
(Interestingly, he runs into the same contextual problem I reported from beta due to the layout of the screen, while doing a Census record attachment task)
Like Beta, when you start a flow of someone in a record match/compare for one person, it shows you people at the top through them sequentially.
Todd mentions that there's been so much effort invested in this, that the web page version will follow this flow. (Not sure why we were asked to evaluate the version on beta if they're going to be following this pattern anyway.) It's been implemented to make it easier for new users, and asks advanced users to just try it... you're supposed to like it. (My conversation with a familysearch developer today also says that we're gonna need to go through this to possibly get a better method in the future.They're REALLY trying hard to make it easier to use for newbies.)
=======================
My contributions (50:39)
