Amy Archibald said: The fan chart, via the FamilySearch Family Tree app, on an Android phone can be extended to 7 generations currently. If you select the Options icon, the top part is defaulted to 4 Generations with a drop down arrow to the right. Select the arrow and you can extend up to 7 generation.

There are better fan charting solutions, but associated with other applications. I briefly explored Ancestral Quest's charting solutions (which I use but have no other connection to the product or the company) and found there is a charting companion that offers some interesting solutions. You may want to explore these if you must have larger charts, perhaps printed on larger stock.

I don't see a drop down on my laptop. Is there a way to get 7 generations on a laptop?

How can I hide the tool bar so I only see the fan chart on my screen ?

@LegacyUser Thank you for you suggestion. It has been passed on to the appropriate Product Manager.

@Jane Cantrell Brookman, this is a zombie thread from three and a half years ago, revived by a comment this afternoon. You can tell that it's old from the "LegacyUser" username.

@kathrine kristensen, you can get rid of the toolbar by clicking on it.

Julia Szent-Györgyi/ Jane Cantrell Brookman : Zombie thread or not. I still like the idea of having more than 7 generations in the fan chart. Let the user decided what he/she wants to see and what is visible on the screen. It is nice to see which branches still need some further research. Most of my seven generations are already filled, so showing a few more would be nice.

You even might hide the center for some number of generations and make the outer generations easier to read.

@Robert Lamping: fan charts are a balancing act between readability and scope; on my screen, for example, I can just barely squeeze in the six-generation chart if I want to both fit it all on screen at once and be able to read it. I generally leave it at seven generations and pan to the section I want, but that gets pretty annoying.

I don't think "hiding the center" would work, because that'd mean splitting each wedge in half, which would mean that only names like my mother's (ten characters total, including the space) would fit anywhere. Names like my father-in-law's (26 characters)? No hope. I'm better off doing what the chart can already do: a separate one for each parent or grandparent.
