The dates covered by one film can be quite wide, and one film can contain several "Items" with different owners. If a single record is too recent to be published, or if the owner of one part doesn't give permission for digitization, the entire film cannot be published.

You will see on the Catalog a column with "DGS numbers". My understanding is that a DGS number indicates the film has been digitized.

If a DGS number is present but there is a microfilm symbol, then the film has been digitized but this digital film cannot be published. It may be that FS is still preparing the digital films for publication, but far more likely is that FS is unable to publish them due to either of the three reasons I mentioned earlier. FS will not disclose the reason why it cannot be published, but often it is obvious. You should contact the owner of the records if you want to know why the records cannot be published on FS and to enquire about alternative ways to view the records.

If there is no DGS number, you can contact Support, and ask that the digitization of certain films be prioritized. If it possible to, FS will digitize the films you requested within a few months.

Online, front-door access is a different question entirely. FamilySearch's all-or-nothing approach to privacy law enforcement means that if there's a single image newer than 100 years on the entire microfilm, then the whole image batch is back-door-access only.
