I would actually say that the choices on the drop down menu will still respond differently depending on which side of the mouse you use - left-click to open the thing in the current tab, wheel-click to open it in a new tab, right-click to produce a pop-up with "Open link in new tab" or "... new window" or "... new private window" - or at least, that's what my Firefox and mouse do.
The only things that have become restricted are the very top level words which now only activate a drop-down menu and no longer act as a link. One good reason - in my view - for restricting those is that menu "Search" didn't link to a general Search screen - it linked to the "Search / Records" screen. "Family Tree" didn't go to some general "Family Tree" screen, it went to the "Family Tree / Tree" screen. And I think (but am not certain) that "Memories" didn't go to a general "Memories" screen - it went to "Memories / Overview". In other words, there was a mismatch between labels and targets.
As I said above - for those of you who were used to all this, you were fine. It's newcomers who would struggle to get their heads round what menu choice went where and why some were duplicated.0 -

It may have been moved to the "Bottom" of the screen/page; but, for all intensive purposes, for most Users/Patrons, it has "Disappeared" - really, how many even go down to the "Bottom" of the page/screen.
I help, new; and, inexperienced, Users/Patrons just about everyday; and, not once, that I can recall, were they even aware that there was "Stuff" at the "Bottom" of the page/screen.
I seldom, if every go there to the "Bottom" of the page/screen, EXCEPT to (1) Check to see if the FORMAT of the 'Dates' for the, "FamilySearch", "Terms of Use" (Updated 2019-12-10); and, Privacy Notice (Updated 2018-09-01), have changed from "yyyy-mm-dd" to International 'Date' Format ( dd Mmm YYY ), which they have NOT; and/or, (2) go to the "Site Map" to check if the various incorrect links, have been corrected, which some have not.
So ...
That ...
Again, I reiterate, for all intensive purposes, for most Users/Patrons, the "Volunteer" 'Link', has "Disappeared" ...

NONE of those THREE (x3) 'Icons' are necessary.
The words of, 'Help'; 'Message'; or, 'Users Display Name', are all that is needed; and, if that is not sufficient; then, simply put a Small THIN "Border" around those individual words so that they are/act like a 'Button', even have a 'light' shading as the "Fill" - that is all that is necessary - certainly NOT those UNNECESSARY "Icons", that take up valuable 'real estate'.

You forgot that not every FS user understands English! It has been a real problem here in Finland amongst older people. Now we are fortunate that FS is beeing translated to Finnish at the moment, we are excited.(even that I know that translation proces does not fit very well with Finnish language, because it is designed with English using prepositions and we do not have those, we conjugate words.) But still0 -

'Oh', I have NOT forgotten that NOT every User/Patron of "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" understands "English".
When we travelled the World for 2 1⁄2 Years I was helping people from everywhere.
In fact, I have, Samoan, and Tongan, Wards; and, a Chinese Branch, in my Stake, who I regularly help.
When the Members of the Chinese Branch are working in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" with the 'Language' set at "Traditional Chinese", my standard 'quip' is that, if they can read the "Chinese" Characters on the page/screen, I can help them with/through the pages/screens of "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch"; and, I do.
And, I recently found that I have a "Danish" connection through some of my extended Family Ancestry.
Like a number of the regular participants in this Forum, my version of "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" is set at "English"; and, that is what I relate to.
Unfortunately, I am not multi lingual.
But, 'Yes' is so great to see the number of "Languages" around the World being added to "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" - even if I cannot read or understand them.
Despite that ...
I am certain that there are "words" in the various languages around the World that would translate to the words of, 'Help'; 'Message'; or, the 'Users Display Name', to negate the need for those 'Icons'.

That is a very good point. People tend to scroll down as far as they need to go and no further - hence they do not "discover" stuff at the bottom. One possibility would be to put all those bottom page links into a permanently visible hamburger menu. But that's just off the top of my head.
Even I took months - possibly even years - to realise that on the very front FS splash screen, there is stuff below the big "family picture". And that's even with a visible scroll bar that ought to have hinted its existence to me. It's just like the photo was a photo so why would there be anything below it??? I suspect I only discovered it when I played about with the zoom and realised that (at 80% mind) there was stuff "below the fold". A veritable face-palm from me.
To be clear - none of this UI design stuff is easy - that's why it's important to warn people if things change.0 -

No real difference with that than using the other 'Button' on the 'Mouse', the difference with the latter is that you get more "Options".
Point is, that we were able to select any of the links before; and, use other 'Button' on the 'Mouse' to open them in a NEW, 'Tab'; 'Window'; or; "Incognito"/"Private" 'Window' - we CANNOT now - there was NO need to "Change" that functionality - regardless if it is the norm elsewhere.
