There are several areas in FamilySearch where a name can appear. The following may help.
FamilySearch FamilyTree is a massive single tree that is designed to cover the entire family of mankind as much as possible with existing records. It is open edit, meaning that anyone with a free FamilySearch account can edit the record.
Historical records are original documents and as such should remain as they exist. The digital images of these records allow us to view a copy of the original. Until about the early part of the 1900s, spelling was very inconsistent and often depended upon how the person making that record heard the name. It is very common for census records to have spelling variations from census to census.
The search routines make use of indexed data of the original records and may contain mistranscribed errors. FamilySearch is currently working on a means to correct those errors but that is in the early stages of development.
If you are new to FamilySearch, you may want to make use of The Family History Guide. I’m currently using my iPad and don’t have the URL available, but you can find it in the Solutions Gallery (link at the bottom of this page and most FamilySearch pages).0
