It took me a half hour just to get to myself and I have no idea how I will teach this to new comers in a community family history activity our ward is hosting.

I have no reason to doubt your general teaching capabilities. However, until fully acquainted with how the latest version of FamilySearch works, I would think it best for you not to try to teach it to newcomers at your forthcoming ward event.
There is so much poor work being carried out (in Family Tree) at present that surely you would not want to possibly compound the problem by providing well-intended but incorrect advice to the inexperienced?0 -

Changes are always disruptive and most of us do not like them. The computer industry has always made changes to the way things are done and FamilySearch is no exception.
The Family History Guide mentioned by Robert is an excellent approved training guide and the authors do their best to keep up with the changes that are constantly being made to the FamilySearch site.0
