Gerald Lee Stevenson said: We are disappointed that the ward indexing reports no longer show individual progress. This will destroy our annual ward competition between the brothers and sisters. This competition motivated so many in our ward to index when they otherwise do not get involved. It also gets many more names indexed for the important salvation for the dead. Perhaps you could have the report be optional in showing or not showing individual indeing numbers. I know that there are people who don't want competition. If it was optional, then everybody could have what they want.

Competitions encourage speed and not careful quality and they want to discourage competitions. Check the blog to see other ways you ward can explore indexing in new ways

Tom Huber said: Generally speaking, the Church is moving away from reporting numbers. We have seen this in reporting whether or not a member has visited their families during the month. Rather than the "if I honk as I pass you, you've been visited."

The same is true of a lot of our activities. The responsibility falls on us, not our leaders, in what we do and how we go about doing it. Competition, for more than just quantity, is now discouraged, and as a result, there are other ways of doing things.

The blog article provided by Amy is a very good example of how a ward activity can still involve indexing, but go further in helping others enjoy the blessings of what they are doing.

Gerald Lee Stevenson said: Sorry, I am still disappointed with the new reports. I understand that there are people and leaders who abuse the system when we use numbers, but I think it should be an option. After all, every hair of my sparsely covered head is numbered, and every sparrow that falls is numbered. Numbers can be very important to certain personality types. I don't believe it should be an all or nothing program.
