Bug 15 Source Linker Shows Wrong Attachment

Woody Brison said: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/per... shows the 1911 Canada census with an Unfinished Attachments. Following that link takes us to the Source Linker where at the bottom there are two individuals listed in the record. Arthur (circled in red with "1" next to it) is in a colored rectangle and Frances is in a white one. There are no obvious clues as to how to get them attached to the right dossiers.
The only move I know is to change the Person of Record on the left (link circled in blue with "2" next to it). When I click on this, and pick Arthur, it shows Arthur now attached to James McQuaid. This is indicated by the word "Detach" (circled in red with "3" next to it) and obviously, the juxtaposition.
On investigation he isn't really attached. It just displays wrong. I didn't try clicking Detach. 'Fraid to.

Gordon Collett said: This doesn't look like a bug in the source linker to me. It looks like the source attachments got mixed up somewhere and the database still thinks that the source for James really is still attached to both James and Arthur.
You do need to click the detach at #3 above. That should take care of the problem nicely. If not, you may need to detach the source from both James and Arthur then reattach ti to James.
Again, the source linker is working just fine and is showing you that the attachments got messed up and need to be fixed.0 -
Paul said: I can understand the worry about detaching a record, which might then be separated from the individual it belongs to, But perhaps it will not do this and then allow the source to be attached to the desired person instead. No harm in trying, I guess - you can always add it back to James McQuaid if it doesn't work as Gordon suggests. At least you'll know what (not) to do if this situation arises in future!0

Jeff Wiseman said: Woody,
This is not a bug. It is only the confusing way the source linker works.
Although you'd need to confirm this first, My guess is that Arthur and Frances McDonald (the grandchildren of James and Joannah), are likely the children of James and Joannah's daughter Sarah Frances McQuaid who married Allan Lauchlin MacDonald.
There is the possibility that one of the other daughters of James and Joannah married a Mr. McDonald, but just for the current discussion, let's assume that Sarah Frances McQuaid is their parent.
The reason that Arthur and Frances McDonald's name do not show up on the right hand side of the source linker is because they are NOT in the immediate family of James and Joannah in the FamilyTree. They would be in their daughter Sarah's portion of the family tree. In order to change the focus on the family in FamilyTree in the source linker, you have to use the RIGHT HAND column change control and set the focus person in the FamilyTree to Sarah Frances McQuaid:
As you can see, once you set the family focus on the right to the correct part in the Tree, Arthur and Frances can be moved up and added to their other McDonald siblings (kinda looks like his actual name is probably Loyala Arthur McDonald. Although the middle initial and birth date are out some, Frances G may also actually be Frances Isabella).
The source linker is now attempting to associate names on the source (left hand side) with names that don't exist in Sarah's immediate family (right hand side). In this case, NONE of the left/right pairs are correct (i.e., is shown with the attachment icon--i.e., the document with a paper clip). The positions for all of the others is approximated as best as the linker can figure out, but at least it does place the triangle warning icon to show that things like James McQuaid in the source is NOT REALLY ATTACHED to Sarah Frances McQuaid in the FamilyTree even though they are placed next to each other.
(The little paper clip document or triangle warning icons, and the Detach button are Two totally separate links placed very close to each other. They are not the same thing as many people mistakenly think!)
The following illustrates what it would look like after you drag Arthur and Frances up to their respective positions in the children list for Sarah Frances (McQuaid) McDonald:
Note that normally they would be showing the Compare and Attach functions instead of the Detach and Warning icon. This is because they have both already been attached to brand new and unattached floating records in the FamilyTree. In order to properly resolve this now, those floating records which are now duplicates for the previously existing records (i.e., for Loyala Arthur McDonald and Frances Isabella McDonald) will have to be merged into those previously existing records.0 -

Punch this secret button and it opens up. Right over there next to the skeletons of all the people who couldn't figure it out0

Jeff Wiseman said: Even though a green shaded box indicates that that person in that source has been attached to someone else in the FamilyTree, "Zork" could certainly improve things by adding the warning triangles to Arthur and Frances McDonald in this case so that you can find out where they are actually ATTACHED without having to totally reverse engineer the entire family!
Or put them into the "Others from Family Tree" category on the right hand column.0
