Revision to Portrait selection process

Ray Batig said: I have uploaded countless photos to ancestors and relations details pages. The current source of many photos are thumbnails that are used for obituaries. These thumbs have been cropped to show a closeup face picture. The current capability of the round portrait selection tool does not deal with these closeups at all and if directly used only a fraction of the face is seen. In some cases these are the only pictures available.
Since there already is a very good system in place to tag people in the Memories photos why not replace the portrait with a rectangle and then use the same approach / software to select the portrait.
This would eliminate maintaining two photo tagging / selection systems and make it much easier to use easily available thumbnails?
Thank you.

Cropped it down to what I thought would fit. Added the pic to photos then went to 'Home Page" and selected picture to set the circle. Best I could get was nose and eyes. Why is this part of FS sooooo difficult to work with0 -

The request for a different format (rectangular or square vs round) is not a new request.
What I do is upload a photo that contains the person. I do not crop the photo. After selecting the photo, I adjust the person's position and size with the controls available:
and save the results. The advantage to using one photograph that contains the person (and others) is that the portrait for the others in the photo can use the same photo. Uploading cropped photos is a waste of time, since the tools exist to center and size the person in the portrait circle.0 -
Ray Batig said: Hi Tom,
I fully agree with what you say and that it is correct for a picture with multiple people, however, the obituary photos show only one person and it is a thumbnail. Since I do not have access to other photos I have no choice but to use it. In this electronic age there are few people who print pictures and make books of them, so I see my issue getting worse.0 -
Tom Huber said: I understand and concur. For those kinds of pictures, I typically will increase the resolution if possible and work with that result. The resolution is what the slider best controls.
I use Irfanview (I am not affiliated in any way with the site and product) when working with photographs, particular the Ctrl-R feature which allows me to change the size and resolution independently of each other.0
