Dark Mode

Tom Huber said: From what I’ve read on the topic of dark mode, it is not a function of a website. It is a browser/operating system setting.
I could be wrong, but very few of us are likely to use the feature.0 -
ATP said: Yes, it is a personalization of a device display settings, not a website.0

Jordi Kloosterboer said: The website can be made to look like whatever with CSS. With the toggle of a button, the website can change looks (it doesn't have to be dark, it could be blue or whatever). It does not have to do with anything the system says or the browser (but it can too...). But that is besides the point, FamilySearch will probably not invest in this at least for a few years if at all in the near future.0

Jeff Wiseman said: Unless, of course, the programmers for the website have overridden generic operations of browsers on the website. There are operations on the FS website that, although typically available to browser users elsewhere, have been disabled and customized for whatever purposes.0

joe martel said: Dark Mode is a function of the browser and the website. If you set to dark mode you'll see many sites have not coded for it. Likewise for FamilySearch pages.
The site is being incrementally upgraded using a new code stack and you'll see the site pages slowly roll out on that new stack. Part of the design on this new stack has consideration for Dark mode, but each component will have to be coded for that. As you can guess, that takes resources, so there will likely be give and take as to what teams and what pages have time to code for dark mode.0 -
We need a Dark Mode option for all pages in FamilySearch.org, accessed thru settings, now.1

The option of a dark mode for all of FamilySearch has been mentioned before, and I hope the idea is still on the table. I have created my own version, and it has a few glitches, but ever since I started using it I've been using FamilySearch a lot more. I'm sure there are other users that would appreciate the feature as well.

I probably am not up to date but I have no idea what a "dark mode" might be Could you explain in more detail what you are talking about and what features not present in the current system would be implemented in "dark mode".0
-
Just thinking 'out aloud here' Perhaps, like the "Invert Colours" Option in the "Pedigree" Views, but in this case (ie. IDEA) The WHOLE of "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" or even the whole of "FamilySearch." Just my thoughts. Brett
ps: I am, neither, for or against - just as long as there is an option to chose either.0 -
gasmodels, Dark Mode is a feature that is being supported by several operating systems at present. Some applications give you the ability to turn this on. Some people prefer this mode for various reasons. A good overview is given here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-on-dark_color_scheme
Although it is sometimes referred to as "Night Mode", it should not be confused with what on some systems are referred to as "Night Shift". In Night Mode, colors and intensities are inverted on some parts of the screen to reduce the total amount of light coming from the screen. In Night Shift, the color temperature of the screen is shifted from a cooler (over 5000° K) to a warmer (3800° to 4600° K) value.

Thanks for the education on the suggestion of the original poster. I personally like the current setup but would have no concern if an alternative was offered.

I would adore a dark mode here. The white on the site hurts my eyes badly and gives me headaches. I use a dark mode web extension but it is not perfect and inverts the pictures and causes some thing to not work correctly (such as this text box, I had to disable dark mode to use it as it went to the wrong area of the screen and I could not move it.) Please give us a dark mode option to get rid of the painful white.

I just came here to say that a Dark Mode would be awesome. I'm happy that I found this thread dealing with this already. It's so tiring to work on FamilySearch for long periods starring at the bright white color, it kills our eyes. Please, FamilySearch team! It shouldn't be so hard!

I love FamilySearch, but my eyes get tired very easily with all this white background. PLEASE DEVELOPERS, please give us dark mode setting

In the tree view you can click on "Options" and select "Invert Colors".

It's good to know that the tree has a dark setting, but I don't spend much time there and I feel like a site-wide dark mode would be very useful for those insomnia nights. I agree with OP that the white background also gets tiring easily, and would love a sepia option as well.

If there could be an option to choose a darker color palette or schema, that would be easier on the eyes, currently trying to research on FS after a full day or working on the computer, is tiring on the eyes. This text input box is a big white(bright) square, if we invert the color gray background with white letters there is less strain. Example of contrast is shown below.

The mobile app has a dark mode.

There is a (free) “Dark Reader” Chrome extension that can be enabled on a website-by-website basis. It has many options. I have it enabled only for Web Indexing. And even with it “enabled,” it can be turned off with a mouse click or a keyboard shortcut. Unfortunately, the default keyboard shortcut is the same as one of my favorite horizontal toolbar icons (the 6th icon from the right). I finally figured out how to disable that shortcut in Dark Reader to use it in Web Indexing. Dark Reader also has a ($4.99) IOS App. Other free or cheaper IOS Apps claim to do similar things. The image below on the left side shows a snapshot of some of the IOS Apps, including Dark Reader. On the right side is some Dark Reader information.

Thanks, @John Empoliti I will look into this as a workaround!

You're welcome, @Eduardo Carnalla Gastélum . It's a great tool. I think you'll like it. I don't use any of the fancy options, but they might be of interest to you.

Yes, please. I hope they do dark mode soon. Me too, eye issues. I need this dark mode function badly. I used to spend a lot of time doing genealogy, but it's hard to talk myself into staring into a bright screen all the time anymore.
I wonder if familysearch ever reads any comments here.

Amen, familysearch desperately needs a dark mode. I used to spend a LOT of time doing genealogy, but I developed eye issues, and the bright screen is really deterring me.

Familysearch, will you please make this a priority? The eye pain is real. I can't bring myself to work on familysearch anymore, but used to be on it for about 20-40 hours a week. Right now, I have my screen brightness all the way down, and my blue light filter all the way to the red end, but it's not fixing the problem. Please help us!!!!!! Bless you for your work.

Full internal familysearch dark mode is desperately needed. Ouch, my eyes. :(

I use dark mode on the mobile app but some FS pages don’t comply. Yes, ouch!

I have dark mode and I don't like it. How can I get rid of it on the LDS Family Search program?
