Making OLD Group photos of schools and other gatherings available by Town or County so users can vie

When I add these pictures to familysearch.org and identify one or two people in them I feel sorry that all of the people are not identified and attached to familysearch individuals.
Maybe the site could allow users to attach the pics to their family members?
Thanks.

Gail Theresa Deck said: Oh, that is SUCH a great idea, Sharon! I hope that FamilySearch staff will seriously consider that as an addition to the already fabulous website! I too have many unidentified people in photos. I know what town, but not the names of those pictured. Particularly old school class and family gathering photos from the Baden, Germany. area. A hearty thumbs up to this idea!0

Here is a post on the subject of photo copyright law.

There is a way users can Tag photos they upload. If enough photos where Tagged the right way, the search feature should work as you invision.0 -
Jeff Porter said: As Lyle mentioned, be sure and add a standardized location to each photo--that will help find them. You could also add a Topic Tag to the photo that includes the City name--that would help people searching Memories for a specific city.0

Sharon Rouse said: Nearly all of the photos were taken before 1923 and have been published in County History Books. If there was a site created it would have to be for pre 1923 photos only, if I understand you correctly.
Could you explain tagging a little clearer?0 -
Tom Huber said: Photos published in books are covered by the book's copyright, presuming that the author of the book had permission to publish the photo.
Tagging is the act of setting up and identifying each person in the photograph. Open the memory at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/per... and then move your mouse pointer over each person's face. They have been tagged to the person's record in the massive tree and all but one person in the photograph is deceased, an infant in the arms of his father. In the list to the right of the photograph, you will find links to the person's profile, if they are deceased.
Can these memories be found using only the location? There is a search feature for photographs, but I don't know how effective it is. I just updated the photo I referenced with the place and then did a search. No results for the place in the search. I'll have to check later to see if it shows up. For those interested, the search feature is found in the Search menu as Search... Images. (https://www.familysearch.org/records/...)
This is an extremely important topic for this forum, because if the search feature does work against memories, then the ability to search on places will do what you want.0 -
Tom Huber said: It appears that the search of images does not work with memories. This needs to be addressed by FamilySearch.0

Jeff Porter said: Sharon, my comment about tagging was not the type of tagging Tom mentioned. Each memory, while being viewed, has a "Topic Tag" area at the top of the details section to the right of the photo. You can add topic tags other have already created (a list will appear as you begin to type a topic tag name) or you can create a new one. Think of the topic tags like a facebook hashtag, although it can be multiple words with spacing. The beauty of using topic tags is that when you go to the memory find feature, you can choose to search based on either the regular search or by the topic tag search.
Now, to address Tom's concern about using the memories search function. If you search based on topic tag search, you will see ALL memories that have that topic tag, regardless of who is tagged in the memory. It will not show tags of living people, but it will show the photo. This topic tag search can also reduced down to just topic tags for your ancestors (see the checkbox on the search results page).
Now, the text search is quite different. This search uses text found in the Title and the description ONLY. It does not search for tag names. This search also has a ton of rules associated with what it will display and what it won't. If you want to see an explanation as to what will show and what won't, click the "radio button" to do a text search, then click the blue wording below the search box that says "How to Use the Find Feature in Memories". This will explain what will be in the results set and what won't.
Bottom line, a Topic Tag search will show many more results, with less rules, IF the memories have had topic tags added to them. So, go wild with creating topic tags. You can create many topic tags for the same memory. Like "Disneyland", "Anaheim", "California", "1964", "Porter Family Reunion" etc.0 -
Tom Huber said: Update: the search images works with historical records only. The Find function with memories does not search the places field.0
