There are now a number of options available (although the Family section still needs more work) that suffice many relationships.
Married couple with biological children and Married couple with step, foster, adopted, guardianship, etc. children.
Divorced couples (same as above, but with a divorce entry (with or without dates)
Couple who lived together with children (biological, or otherwise).
Couple who did not live together, but the children were supported by both parents.
One-night stands are in a class by themselves (and includes in vitro pregnancies from donated sperm) where the father did not provide any support for the child. In those situations, there have been several extensive discussion threads in this forum.
If the father is not known, then the child only appears with the mother. Since few mothers (in the past) could live alone with a newborn infant, they usually lived with her parents who provided the necessary support for the mother and child. In those situations, the mother-child relationship is shown as biological, but the mother's parents are shown (often unofficial) as having a guardian relationship -- the child shows up with the mother and with the grandparents.
Even if the father is known, the same will apply if the mother had help raising the child, but the child will show up with three family relationships -- biological with father, biological with mother, and guardianship with its grandparents.0
