Type of Marriage - can we get "Marriage Intention" or "Marriage Banns" as an option?
Thanks for the consideration.

Jeff Wiseman said: I agree. It is understood by many here that that area of the FamliyTree record management regarding marriages needs significant improvement.
For example, the labels on those pages are inappropriate in some cases. Those are not "Marriage Types" or even "Marriage Events" (as shown on the current labels). And if you go to the "Add a Marriage" window, you have items like "Annulment" and "Divorce" there. An annulment is NOT a marriage. A divorce is NOT a marriage. And yet they are currently labeled as such (which seems pretty silly to me anyway)
These are "Couple Relationship Events". If you only had a Marriage Intention event or Marriage Banns event but no actual marriage, then there WERE NO MARRIAGE EVENTS. They could never be properly termed as "Marriage Types" or "Marriage Events" if there was never a marriage. They were only events in the history of that couple.
So yes, we do need what you are suggesting. But to properly do so there also has to be a rearrangement of things with labels changed to what they should correctly say. The current layout of those web pages has been done using a very ambiguous notion of "Marriage" that is not correct in many ways.
Last I heard, FS was looking into improving this area.0 -
Tom Huber said: From what I have gleaned from comments by FamilySearch personnel, the site is undergoing some major revisions. One of the largest and most impactful took place late last summer when the Family Tree person user interface was redesigned. Bugs and problems with that design are still being worked out.
As part of that design, some changes are being made to the Family Section on the details page of a person in the massive tree.
For a long, long time, some significant shortcomings to the couple relationship area have been noted, specifically in the area of event types.
This problem is further exacerbated by the fact that many historical documents which are labeled marriages are not marriage records at all, but often are license records in which some entries include marriage returns. They are consistently (and incorrectly) recorded as marriage records.
We can only hope that the development team involved with reworking the couple-relationship area (which eventually will accommodate **** relationships) will not just add to the list of "marriage" events (two of which, as Jeff points out, are not marriages), but make it possible for us to create Custom events or facts, similar to the way we can create a Custom Event or Custom Fact that can be added to the Other section of a person's details page, only in this case, added to the couple relationship event section (with tagging to supporting sources for the event or fact).0 -
Completely agree with the above statements! I just found "a purpose of marriage" for a couple in Medway, Norfolk, Massachusetts. Later in the year this is followed in another collection as a marriage on 5 June 1800. I believe that would fall under the category as Marriage Intentions. In Massachusetts there are several different collections recording marriages and marriage intentions. The dropdown list does not list Marriage Intentions therefore there is a conflict of dates for the marriage.
Also when the marriage information is changed the latest info is moved into the display location and because of this there is conflict. It is my habit to delete the partial marriage events to keep them from displaying partial or incorrect information. The KA for marriages should be updated to reflect this procedure.

Other information> Add Custom Event
As mentioned above is the way to currently add events not classified. I think you can also create records for Marriage events and attach under marriages. Whether a license, return etc I tend to classify (perhaps too loosely) them as 'marriage records'. If the only record that should be a marriage record is the certificate/return then I guess the others would just be records attached to the marriage event - obviously intention/banks record dates would be before the marriage event.
