Marking (Photo) Memories as a Duplicate
I would love a way to mark the photos as a duplicate. On the person's memory page, when viewing a photo it could show a 'similar photos' page for any photos that have been marked as duplicate. That way any mistakenly marked-as-duplicate photos are not lost and can be 'unmerged' if you will. There may also be a review process by other FS users so as to reduce the incorrectly marked-as-duplicate photos.

Beth Ann Wiseman said: One option you can try is to create an album for all the duplicate memories and put all the memories in that album.
Then choose the best copy that you want to appear on the memories tab, and detach all the other photos. That way, all the photos can be found by navigating the album, but only the "best" one shows up on the memories tab.
Any user can detach any memory. To detach the memory: view the memory, use the list of people tagged in the photo, expand the menu associated with the person you want to detach, and click the "Detach from Family Tree" link. Supply a reason that says that the photo is the person, but it is being moved to a duplicates album to clean up the memories tab. The photo will keep the tag, it will now show as detached and the memory will no longer appear on the memories tab.
For an example see Elizabeth Ann Hendrickson (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/per...)
The photos marked with yellow, have duplicates that are contained in an album that can be discovered by viewing the memory.

Change log looks like this:
From the one photo that is left, you can find a link to the album of duplicates and from there see all the duplicates.
The album with all the duplicates of this photo looks like this:
The downside is, if someone uploads another duplicate tomorrow, only you can add it to this duplicates album. If someone else wanted to clean it up, they would have to create another duplicates album to hold them all.
You would also need to be careful in detaching to make sure you "save" all the duplicates in an album before detaching.0 -
I have a different issue, uploaded 12 photos to a profile, all are distinctly different, and there were NO memory Photos on the profile so no duplicates to any previous photos, and yet Im being told 6 of them (half) are duplicates. Why is this happening and how do I add the rest and get rid of the "Duplicate" marked photos? I tried changing the name of some, didnt work. Tried uploading one at a time, didnt work. Still says they are duplicates. Once theyre marked duplicates I cant open them or manipulate them in any way.

Everyone uploading Memories items - do not necessarily all have the same goals, methods, and processes in place (they dont all have the same perspective as to what their main goal is as to a memories project) . There are various scenarios where people may indeed realize that a photo has already been uploaded by someone else - but there still may be very legitimate reasons that they still may feel it very necessary and important (to reach their project goal) to upload the same photo someone else has and tag it to the corresponding person.
Their perspective may be totally different than YOUR perspective (of having a nice clean memories section of a given person with no duplicates in the section).
In my humble opinion - - we have to be very careful to "pick our battles" in a collaborative system - and I feel that there are a large portion of other things that are much more critical to focus on - than whether or not their are duplicate photos on a persons memory tab that multiple people have tagged.
One option, though, is to have one of the people mark their duplicate item as "private" - so that it doesnt really show to everyone else. But then again - most everybody considers their photo to be the one that shoudl display . . .

as to Johnny Wesch's comments about duplicates - - keep in mind that what FS considers a duplicate - - is not at the person level - but at the gallery level.
if you were uploading 6 items to a single person - and the system said three of them were duplicates
it means those three - you had already uploaded to FS - but possibly linked to a different person - or maybe not linked to anyone at all.
When you are assessing "duplicitty" you have to look at your "gallery" as a whole - and not just the photos linked to that one profile/person.
You may need to go to your gallery view - and do a "file name" search - to see all your photos and where you may have already uploaded that image previously.
