Highlight line to keep track of where you are

Everett Roy Staley said: A previous download/install Windows version of indexing had a feature to show a highlight line/bar to help keep track of where you are on the scanned image. I can't find anything similar in the web indexing version. It would be great if the developers add that feature. Some batches have 30+ rows, and a highlight line to mark your place would be VERY helpful. Thanks!!!!

The "Show Ruler" is checked, but the ruler does not come on.

@BobbieJensen sometimes that ruler plays "hide and seek" and gets hidden at the bottom or very top of image window. There are a couple of things you can try to find it. First make your image as small as possible with the minus key (zoom out). If you still don't see the ruler, click off the image thumbprints at the bottom by clicking the down arrow next to Image 1 of ___. (Click them back on the same way). If you still haven't found the ruler, put your cursor right in the middle of the image window. Hold down the cursor and move the screen up and down. Let me know if any of that works!

@BobbieJensen, If you do not want to go through the exercises that Melissa mentioned just disable (uncheck it) the Show Ruler option then enable it again. The ruler will appear in the default location, right across the center of the image.

I tried that @J C Bingham before I posted the myriad of options. It doesn't return to the default location on my MAC. It stays exactly where I hid it. Kind of weird.

@Melissa S Himes, Well that is a bummer. It used to work that way. I just tried it and I get the same thing you did, it just comes back where it was. Yet another instance of someone fixing something that was not broken. If they are going to fix things in that manner they should have the decency to tell us and the decency to provide a way to get the ruler back to the default location without all of the gymnastics.

I suspect that the 'fix' was made when they made the change that prevents the ruler from being dropped outside the visible image area. Another 'fix' that disabled a 'feature' that I used frequently. I am still getting accustomed to the new way that 'fix' works.

For those on a Windows PC, check out the previous conversation below. There is a very versatile alternative ruler/reading guide called “A Ruler For Windows.” It can even be made vertical. It does not “stick” to the image and move with it, rather it stays in one place and the image can move behind it, or you can move it where you wish relative to the screen and image. On the website I refer to below, the developer has a video demonstrating its various features (color, transparency, thickness, length, etc). I’ve been using it for years. Something like it might exist for a MAC, but I don’t know.

Has anyone found an actual solution to the lost ruler issue rather than adding another one as the last post suggests. I have a PC where the ruler was moved off the visible area by a patron in Chrome and I cannot get it back. I even uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled. The ruler shows up in Edge, but we have been told to use Chrome for best results when indexing. None of the tricks listed above have worked. There has to be a way to clear the Chrome memory of where the ruler is? I tried removing history and cookies.

They should just restore the old behavior of "Show Ruler." When you first selected “Show Ruler,” it appeared at a ”Home” position near the top of the image. If you deselected and reselected “Show Ruler,” - -> no matter where it had been, it would be back at its “Home “ position near the top of the image. Easy to find - no more "lost" Ruler.

When you deselect and reselect "Show Ruler" nowadays, tt stays where it is - perhaps hidden from view.

I don't why but on my Mac ,using Safari, it is now impossible to "lose" the ruler. Once I zoom out, it shows up. The ruler was MIA on my Mac (and others) within the last two months. We couldn't even turn it on or off. I don't use the ruler often, but just checked to see the behavior and it is back and much better than before.

I have never used Chrome for indexing or anything else. Safari, Edge, and Firefox are also recommended browsers for indexing.

I did some more experimenting and the ruler position appears to be saved in the Chrome profile. I do not know how to clear it from the profile, but switching to a different profile brings the ruler back to the location last used in that profile. If you create a new profile, that location is the default position near the top of the image.
