How are Record Hints counted for the tally on the home Page?

The number of Temple and Record hints in parentheses on the Home Page does not match the number I count in the Hints page. How are the hints counted? And, why do the same people keep having hints?

I can confirm that I also see a different number. For me, I see (34) on the home page, but when I go to see my hints, I see 39 people with 40 hints (one has both a temple and a record hint). I wouldn't worry too much about that slight discrepancy — it's not too far off. New hints are appearing all the time, and existing hints get attached or dismissed. The record hint list is quite dynamic, and so I don't get concerned about the precise length of that list at any point in time.

As I have reviewed my hints over the years, I see some new people and some repeats. The new people might appear because they are new to my family (I or someone else added a new relative, sufficiently closely related to appear in my hints) and an existing record matches them. Hints for new or existing relatives in the Tree might appear because a new record has become available or because some details for my relative have changed so that a record now matches them.

Thank you. I volunteer as a FamilySearch Service Phone Missionary. This question was asked of me recently but we could not find any answers. Like you, my thoughts were, "who cares?" but the person wanted to know so I thought I would try to find an answer. I tried counting the temple opportunities and the hints and my numbers did not match anything either. I then thought maybe temple hints count each ordinance. Nope that was waaaaay too many hints. I guess I'm now just curious as to how the computer comes up with the number it does. She had 69 total hints. I counted 16 Temple Hints and 20 Record Hints, so she is short 33. That is a BIG number. But, I then tried counting each ordinance and that was too many. Just curious as to how this is all calculated.

I checked mine when you first posted and I had 37 hints - and 37 people. Then I went to each person to work the hints - they each had only one hint. Then I refreshed and had over 100 new hints - some of the people had multiple hints on them. So, I'm wondering if the number actually represents the number of hints - not the number of people with hints.

No, @Amy Archibald , I noted exactly how many people and how many hints I saw, and neither number (40 total hints for 39 distinct persons) matched the number (34) shown on the home page. And even if I were to drill down into each person to see if they had additional hints, that way of counting hints would be even higher, and this couldn't possibly match the count of 34 on the home page.

It seems to be counting profiles rather than actual record hints for me. (76 hints, 76 profiles, many of them with over a dozen hints apiece.)

(I'm not LDS, so there's only the one kind of hint.)
