When a relationship or status is in French do I translate to English? If so what does marital status V or C mean?

If you don't know, return the batch so it can be done by someone who does know the language.

    I do read enough French.

I know that V means Veuve or Widow or Widower.

Also, C means célibataire or single.

I just don't know if I am supposed to translate it to English.

Is the field a "choose one from the dropdown" or a "type here"? If it's the former, you'll of course need to choose the translation, but if it's the latter, I'd just type what's on the form, same as I'd do with a person's name. (Assuming this is the 1921 Canada census, the instructions are sadly lacking on this question.)
