Standard United Kingdom Birthplaces
If you use the fan chart set on birth place and you have ancestors with their birth places in the countries of the United Kingdom before 1801 (when it was established), it should not register as the United Kingdom. It would be helpful if Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland would show instead of the United Kingdom so a person could see exactly where their ancestor came from. I have been changing the birth places of hundreds of people, but it is slow and tedious work. Is there a reason that family search can't automatically standardize the birth place to one of the four countries if the date is before 1801? I know that Gedcoms are causing a problem, because people automatically put in the United Kingdom. Another thing that happens often is names of places and cathedrals etc that are not a part of a standard address are often put in. I have been selecting a standard place name for people and cutting the portion that is not in the standard list and placing that part in the reason, so it can be standardized. What I would like you to do if the birth place on the person can be standardized with the removal of the United Kingdom leaving Wales, Scotland, England or Northern Ireland on people born before 1801 in one of those places then have the program in Family Search do it automatically. Please respond by text to let me know if this is a realistic thing to do, it would save workers in the tree so much time and help us to be productive in other parts of the tree. Thank You, Mack Slye

I would be reluctant to suggest an automated standardization of places. If you search the community for the term "placename standardization," you'll find many threads concerning the problems that has created.

Yes, I was with you all the way until you said "automatically". Sorry, I don't imagine you realise but as @Áine Ní Donnghaile indicates, we have been burned badly by FS doing automatic standardisation in the past. I had standardised the birthplaces of all my ancestors that I understood properly, had to leave FS for a while and when I returned, discovered that they still had the same display places but empty standard place-names. 😯

Here are some examples of placename standardization problems I've reported. https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/130585/error-report-robo-index-collection and https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/136631/error-report-placename-standardization
