Helper Locked Out of records

Another option for viewing the image is to remove everything in the url starting at the first "?"
to just https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9BSF-971L
mod note - Thanks for sharing your concern. I have reported this for investigation. We do not know how long this will take. Thanks for your patience while this is being looked into.

It appears that because the new viewer is also the new index editor, it chokes on helper mode: it doesn't know who to attribute any changes to.
As Maile says, the easiest workaround is to switch to the old viewer by editing the URL.

What old viewer? It is gone when FamilySearch upgraded.

@W D Samuelsen contact me please, the old image browser tool is still (thankfully) very much available. Have you tried Maile's advice?
For example, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS54-PS1Q-S?view=index&action=view goes to the new viewer, which is as slow as molasses, making it completely unsuited to browsing through a film. (It takes a full 20 seconds -- I measured -- to page forward one image. ONE image.) Oh, and it apparently doesn't work in helper mode. (I'm not LDS, so I can't test that.)
Editing the URL to https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS54-PS1Q-S goes back to the old viewer.
Paging forward in this viewer takes a maximum of three seconds (again, I measured).
The thing I find most annoying in the new viewer is that it takes away my current image as soon as I click the arrow, so I'm forced to waste a third of a minute staring at grey.
In the old viewer, the "blink" is delayed to just before the new image loads, meaning that I can get into a quick rhythm of click-check-click-check. (I tried to get a screenshot of the "blink", but it's too quick.)

Those are other issues I find infuriating in this new format as well when I am not in helper mode. Even worse, when exiting to get back to the PID (person page), take longer to do that.
I noticed something else that does not make sense. Why 2 "Views" in the url link? https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHN-GQHW-TX6W?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A6FQQ-Z8MC&action=view

When I click on the original document at this link
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLKC-G1JM?treeref=KCMH-R2N
all I get is thumbnails across the top--see attached screenshot
How do I get to the image?

It's displaying correctly for me at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSGH-C7HZ-K

I'm too lazy to get the Community to cough 'em up, but there have been other threads about this bug. It may be connected to "helper mode" on LDS accounts. (This would explain why neither Áine nor I can re-create the error; neither of us is LDS.)
A workaround is to edit the image's URL: delete the question mark and everything after it (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSGH-C7HZ-K). This will take you to the old image viewer, which has no problem with helper mode.

Julia, thank you so much! Yes, helper mode is the problem, and I do hope they fix it soon! Here is your other thread on this: https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/comment/533757#Comment_533757
You are truly a blessing to FamilySearch, with all of your helps and contributions.

I have an update on this! The engineers have made some progress. When accessing a US census record in sources, the image will now come up like it is supposed to in Helper Mode. Unfortunately. in fixing this another issue surfaced. It doesn't pull up the ribbon view that allows you to browse other images on that census. They are working to fix this as quickly as possible.
There is a workaround. After you pull up the image, click on the person's name with the box/arrow next to it in the top right corner. This will take you back to the index page. Click on the image from that page and it will bring up the image and the ribbon.
I'll keep you posted on the complete fix. Sam 😊

What is going on with the chat message system? I am getting responses that were months ago now.

I have merged a bunch of discussions about the problem with the viewer not working properly when helper mode is on. That way we can keep everyone updated.
