Disappearing discussion
Hello, I have just typed and submitted a detailed discussion topic. I forgot to put a tag on it. I took the Edit option ('4 hours') immediately, and added a tag, but on resubmission I got a message saying that I was not authorised to edit; and now my discussion has disappeared.
I have edited previous discussions several times with no problem.
Do I need to start again please?

We are working on it. If you need something approved, please send me a message and I will get to it asap soon as I can.

It sounds like a problem I, and others had, back in April-July 2021 https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/83506/vanishing-post-in-ideas-records-searching-and-viewing#latest
I have been a member of various Forums over the years, and these other Forums have never had the problems this Community seems to have on an ongoing basis.
Depending on what you are writing about, you could wait a few days and see if your post re-appears, but I think most likely you will need to repost.

Thanks Maureen, glad it's not just me! I will repost (and save a copy of the text, in case).

It's best to always save any post of more than a couple of lines (in Word, or similar), just in case something like this happens. That applies to working in Family Tree, too, where users are often "timed-out" when writing an extended Life Sketch or internal message to another user. Best to write it somewhere "safe" and copy / paste here.

@MandyShaw1 I found your discussion in the spam filter. I am not certain why the filter grabbed it, but wonder if editing it immediately after posting caused the problem.

Many thanks Maile, it's fine now.

This is happened twice in the last two days, but if I go back to edit a post or comment that I've already successfully posted, the post disappears, and maybe reemerges only a good while later after a moderator reapproves it. Any way of fixing this bug?

The edits can get your post sent for approval, but we are not sure if it has to do with the amount of time between when a comment is posted and edited. If you see a pattern, please @ mention or private message me. You can also send me a message when something needs approval.

This issue was a problem back in October 2021 when it was supposed to have been resolved according to Mark McLemore. @Maile L , perhaps you could contact Mark if he is still involved.

Thanks for the heads up @MaureenE123

The only issue I've seen, in the last few months, is when the comment/post contains an image.

I've had an issue where if I edit a comment too many times after posting it, it deletes the comment. I think it may be an intentional feature built into the site, meant to avoid some sort of trolling, but I'm not 100% sure.

Hello, sorry but I have just had the same problem with a question where I edited the title - it suddenly said it needed approval and now the (previously saved and edited) question has vanished altogether.
Do I just need to wait for it to reappear? And why would it show this behaviour at all?
Thanks.

I approved it.

Thank you very much Maile.

Any editing of a message after it's been posted sends a the message immediately into moderation for approval, sometimes for a long time, even if the initial posting is automatically approved. Any possibility of fixing this bug?

It looks like the message I was concerned about was posted, but unfortunately, because it was not visible for so long and was reposted in the order that it was originally posted, it was missed by folks who answered other posts that went up at the same time. I know that 'bumping' posts isn't allowed, so I won't do it - hopefully my question will still be seen.

Sorry but I posted a comment earlier & edited it a few times for clarity, but the final time it just disappeared altogether with no warning, could somebody possibly look to see if it is waiting for approval? Thanks!

It has been approved

You're a star thanks!

@PeterWerner3 if your post in the groups does not get answered, it is ok to post a simple comment such as "I still need help with this."

sorry but I have another one awaiting approval ... apologies, if I knew what was causing this I would avoid it!

I have just encountered this frustrating issue. I had just posted a reasonably-long comment to a discussion that I started the previous day when I realized that there was a minor error in what I had written. I edited the post but, when I saved it, the comment disappeared completely (discussion and drafts). If it's waiting for somebody's approval, surely there would be some indication of its status that would be visible to me. Even if I had saved a copy outside of FS, reposting that would probably get the same treatment. Also, why did the original post with the error not meet the same fate before I could edit it? I'll check back in a few hours and see if it has floated to the surface of this Bermuda Triangle.

I assume you are referring to your missing comments to the discussion shown below.
When I just clicked on the item on the censuses I got this:
A shame these comments have disappeared into thin air, as I was looking forward to reading your further comments on the above - discussion found at:
Whoops - I intended to post just the URL, but just realised that's not so straightforward any more - will have to find the instructions provided on another thread by @Cousin Vinny (but originated by @Julia Szent-Györgyi).
Back to the problem itself - hopefully @Maile L will check this out (as she has in the past for other similar cases). Meanwhile, I would advise that you should always write any piece of more than a few lines into Word (or similar), so you have a saved copy of your comments, before pasting them here.

If you edited your comment shortly after you posted it, the system thinks it is a duplicate comment and marks it as possible spam. It has to be approved and then it can show up in it's original location.

This is a bug; an application whose entire purpose is to track discussions and comments should be able to cope perfectly with the difference between a new comment and an edited existing one.

@Paul W No, it's done that for as long as I've been on here, so several months at least. I often edit messages multiple times after posting, so I've run into it a couple times. I think you have to edit a post multiple times within a short time period for the algorithm to banish it.
