Please update Timeline on individual profiles to reflex important church history.
I recently noticed the changes made on an individual's profile with the historical timeline of important events. It was brought to my attention that none of my African American family member's timeline shows the priesthood ban being lifted in 1978, however, it does show this ban on all of my caucasian ancestor's timelines. Can you update that historical moment for all to see? Also, can you offer some insight on how familysearch would recognize the different races in my family tree because I do not recall providing that information when creating my tree. I have attached a screenshot of my grandfather and grandmother's timeline to show the event was omitted on one side and not the other. I hope this can be updated.
Thank you for your understanding on this sensitive matter.
I wasn't sure of this report - so I did a little digging and found an example where it is listed.
And one where it isn't:
This does appear to indicate some curation by FamilySearch or rules for whether to display or not. There are some puzzling examples of this occurring. There are also obvious differences between what is visible on living profiles and whether one is logging in with a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints account.
You can find here in Community complaints about some historical events being insensitive - perhaps this is a result of such complaints.
As far as how/whether FamilySearch may be able to discover race of living profiles? Some ancestor records include a race field - that is at least one way.1
Thank you for your response. I am hopeful family search can continue improving their updates. It is interesting how you found one example with the same issue that I'm seeing on my tree and one without. My immediate thought was that the system is filtering what information it wants specific viewers to see. In that case, one half of my family would be informed about this event while the other side had no information given from the same source. It would be wise to omit it altogether, or include it on every individuals profile so it doesn't come off as insensitive to users. Again, I appreciate your feedback.1
I suspect that the choice of events to display in a particular timeline (assuming the viewer hasn't turned them off, as I have, at first opportunity) is completely and utterly random.1
