Can anyone tell me please if Palenko is a Polish family name? If yes, does it have any meaning? Any reply would be appreciated. Thank you!
I would say that Palenko is more likely Ukrainian or Slovakian family name rather than Polish. It does not have a specifc meaning in Polish , the closest are : verb to burn or noun : fireplace.
Polish genealogical website : genealodzy.pl lists just very, very few families with this name in Poland :
1 birth and 2 deaths in Warsaw
1 birth in podkarpackie district ( south-eastern Poland)
1 marrriage in podlaskie district ( north-eastern Poland)
But 8 births in Ukraine ( its western part that belonged to Poland befere WWII) and 1 death
Hope it wil help. If you have more details we could see what could be done.
Thank you very much. I have suspected North Slavic origin, and Ukrainian actually makes sense. The family arrived to Hungary at the beginning of the 17's with an "army chaplain", supposedly escaping from the war (freedom fight of Rákóczi).
You are very welcome,
