How to search MY TREE ONLY for a surname?

The just announced Surname Search Feature is almost useless (to me anyway but I suspect to hundreds more).

About a year ago (probably longer) I asked for the capability of searching MY FAMILY TREE fONLY or a given surname.

The search feature you have here, at least the one I was led to from your link, produces all individuals in your database with a given surname. I entered the surname "Butler" and more than half a million records were returned. I know that a handful will belong to my tree, but I cannot check each of half a million records to find mine!

It should be a very simple task to search a member's tree by surname but you have not done it. My own family tree on FS has thousands of entries, and one can only find a person by following lines. I have many hundreds of lines!

Please help.

Sincerely,

Peter Bates

It is unfortunate that the search parameters are not limited to an individual Family Blood line, as that same individual may be blood kin to may other descendants. But you can influence the results by adding places, dates and family members.

Thank you. I know they are not limited to an individual family blood line. But your explanation makes no sense. Perhaps you could speak with someone who understands the computer database. As done in VirtualPedigree, you can search any tree going back from any individual, tagging. each time a selected surname (or any data point) appears and producing a list for the user.

That would be of immense help! I want to search for a Surname that appears somewhere in my family tree. It would help me find cousins.

Yes, it would help hundreds of users and it would be fairly easy to program but the people we deal with here either have no power or have limited understanding of the database or can't be bothered, or a combination of these.
