The project instructions say: "Index each unique name. Some names may be duplicated. When names are exact duplicates, meaning that all required fields are the same, index only the first instance of the name listed. Skip the other exact duplicates and then index the next unique name. Unique names include names with different middle initials and different name spellings or where the other required fields are different."
So, the answer is yes. (Unless they have a spouse listed)

I would disagree. The difference can often be seen in their job which is also listed and the addresses that goes along with those names are almost always different. My understanding for determining whether something is a duplicate or not, is that it has to be exactly the same in all forms if not, it is not a duplicat.

You are incorrect. We do not index addresses or occupations. "Exact duplicate" mean the exact duplicate of what we index.

Patti, you're talking about duplicate images, not names that are repeated within one image. The jobs are not indexed, only the names and spouses are indexed, so having different jobs makes no difference. Since jobs aren't indexed, they won't be in the Family Search index that's used to find these images. It only takes a name being indexed one time to direct the researcher to that particlar image. Once in that image, the researcher can see all of those with that name and perhaps tell which is the person he's interested in by the jobs on the document. The project instructions are very clear on this.

pattilynnwithers1, there's a learning curve in indexing… getting the terms, rules, etc. down and understanding it all. Some of us have been doing this for years, so I hope you don't feel bad that you were corrected. I'm glad you voiced your opinion because I'm sure there are others that might have the same misunderstanding. If we can all be honest and state what our understandings are, that helps a lot of people learn. Thanks for participating.

I wish there were a place that was a final authority for indexing rules. I have been indexing for years, and get frustrated when there are different rules and no way to know which is the rule which applies to the specific situation. I check project rules, which I think overrules general instructions, but sometimes they are different for different batches. I wish there were a way to have either a more defined rule "authority" place or list of which instructions override others. Or a bank of training videos we could watch with specific examples of the most common mistakes.
