How to index DO

DO does indeed stand for ditto, meaning the same as above. Since we index to enable others to find the records, I key the name it stands in place of. DO or ditto won't help someone searching for John Smith, but Smith will.

You will only index the first instance of the name. If you index 17 John Smiths, that falls under the Department of Redundancy Department.

If she's doing Boston tax, here's what the PI says:
- Index each unique name. Some names may be duplicated. When names are exact duplicates, index only the first instance of the name listed. Skip the other exact duplicates, and then index the next unique name. When the middle initials or the given names or surnames are spelled differently, please index these unique names.
"Do" is ditto, exact duplicate. The instructions are clear for Boston records.

City Directories project instructions also limit you to only one instance of a duplicate name. I think the answer is it depends on the type of project you are working on and if that project's instruction or field help has anything specific to the issue.

I'm struggling to find where the OP said she was indexing Boston Tax Records, @erutherford.

I miss those directory projects. It has to be over a year since we've had one.
