Cannot enter a hyphen (dash) character in any field
While doing 1950 Census Household Review today (9 July 2022), I am unable to use the hyphen (dash) character in any data entry field. When I try to enter a hyphen, the image zooms out, and the hyphen is not echoed in the data field.
Sometimes I need to use a hyphen to properly represent the data in the image. (I know that surname field with only a hyphen should be change to use the current surname.)
This problem is occurring when using both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers on Windows 10.

I can no longer fix terms such as son-in-law. It will not let me put the hyphen in.

I am having that problem also. When I use the hyphen key it resizes the image!! I have reported it while working on a Wisconsin census page.

If you have a number pad on your keyboard, use the minus symbol.

Good idea. Thanks

Right @MinnWisRoots , that's what I had to do, use the 10 Key minus sign

@Ronald P. Tilby Others users have reported that using the Dash on the keypad will work. In the meantime, the problem has been reported to the Engineers.

Great work-around all of you! Please report this on the home page of the 1950 census. Thank you so much!

I thought I was. It is never clear to me how to ask questions or report problems

@airland, I'm sorry. Yes, I can see why you would be confused. Please report with our report/feedback functions as those go directly to the engineers. If there are other more serious issues, please report as instructed and also reach out here and we will also back that report. It is good to let us know issues here as others can learn what the proper procedure is and/or find out what the answers are. You are doing a great job! Thank you so much!!

Any work around on a iPad tablet? I have been typing Son In Law.

@vickyg2003, just try any other dash " - " key you can find. You may just have to type "SonInLaw" or maybe "Son In Law" without the dashes for now. This is amazing how long this is taking to correct. I had the same problem with a hyphened surname name the other day.

@vickyg2003, Chas Howell is correct to just go ahead and type son in law without the dashes for now. I don't know behind the scenes, but I do know that there may be bigger fish to fry right now. 🤔 Thank you so much for your patience!!!

Yep, in the grand scheme of things this is small potatoes but really, this should be a quick-fix. There is a line of code that someone recently put in that redefined the normal default function of the dash key that needs to be reversed.

@Chas Howell, would you mind reporting, if you haven't done so already? Thank you!

@AndLinda, others have reported the hyphen problem on the Home page of the 1950 US Census as well as in this forum multiple times. I'm good, I just use my keyboard 10-key minus sign instead.

Thank you @Chas Howell. I do also. Appreciate your patience.

This problem still exists.

@Ronald P. Tilby, yes we are aware the issue still exists. The engineers are aware of the issue. Thank you for your patience.

I'm sure this was actually an intended feature, not a bug. It's very handy most of the time since it avoids the need to go back-and-forth between the mouse and the keyboard. I think this feature is gone now, and I miss it, but I suppose we should go with the crowd on this issue and do without it.

The regular hyphen key has actually been working for me this week since the last update. 😊
