When there's some numbers with checkmarks on the street name
Hi! I'm working on indexing the census and reviewing families in Idaho. I noticed that in the Street Name field, one of the streets only had a couple of numbers, with a checkmark below each one. At least one of my friends found this on a different record (picture attached). What does it mean?

@Daniel Wayne Woodfield, I'm not sure what the checkmark would be other than for enumerator personal reasons. The street names would be the digits, so the 1 would represent 1st street, is what I am thinking without seeing more and knowing more about where in Idaho and seeing what the street names are or were in 1950.
You ask good questions! And we thank you for that. Keep up the great work. We appreciate your efforts.

@Daniel Wayne Woodfield As Linda says, it is difficult to say without seeing more of the image. However, based on what I've been seeing, another possibility is this. Many times the enumerators make notes and indicate this by putting a partial box around the number, 2 sides. The census image has a blank area for notes either above or below the names. In that box, the enumerator puts the number and then more details (kind of like footnotes), often saying things such as "going north on gravel road past county line 5 miles, then east on unnamed gravel road" or "5/10 mile west on San Pedro Road".
In the sample attached, I've highlighted where the enumerator has put the 1 next to the first 2 households and then has the note above which tells you that "San Pedro Road" is the name of the street.

@AndLinda @caisahess1 Here is another example.
I think you are correct, @caisahess1, that the numbers are in partial boxes and correspond to the Notes at the top.
In that case, should we record the contents of the note being referenced (ie. "West on Lester") as the street name, rather than just what's listed in the street name column (ie. "Lester")?

We need to stick to what is in the Field Helps and not worry about the notes. Those researching can see and figure that out. So it would be Lester in this case:
"Select the street name from the provided options.
If the street name was misspelled, select the closest option, and correct the spelling.
If the drop-down list did not include the street name, select Other, and type the correct street name in the additional box.
If the street name was left empty, select Blank."
Bottom line is that we just do our very best. You have asked great questions that will help others and provided great insight! Thank you so much!
