Crossed out information
We often see fields where there is data and the data is crossed out.
What's the general rule?

Click on Transcription Error on the bottom right of your screen. Check the box for Crossed Out, and click Submit. This flags the error in the FamilySearch internal system.
Best wishes!

@Tamara Stevenson, if the name has a line through it and you can still read it, then go ahead and put the name in. So follow the regular indexing rules on the crossed out names.
If it was crossed out and another name written above it and the computer didn't pick it up, then follow the regular indexing rules and put in the name that was above it.
If the name was crossed out, but you could normally read it and record it but the way it is written is sloppy and unclear, then you would put "Unsure".
If it is crossed out and you can't read it because of the manner of the way it was crossed out, then go ahead and mark it as crossed out.
I hope I explained it better and that it helps. It is confusing, but we can do this. Thank you so much for your insight into my confusing statement!

How 'bout on FamilyReview?
An example:
Smith Christy daughter but daughter is crossed but very legible

Family Review doesn't show the same options, there is no need to report those crossed out names. There's a general indexing guideline we are following to review information that is crossed out, but if it was replaced to enter the replaced information. Occasionally people are crossed out because they were somewhere else; still review them the same way.
There is one exception - in the salary fields, the information was crossed out later by someone else and so we're keeping the original values for those fields.

When a line had been crossed out, I chose the not a person button rather than report it as a transcription error. I hope I didn't cause a problem.

I have not seen a not a person button. Yikes. Will look now. I have been deleting the field. We used to have to do that on gradebooks at school. i probably messed those up. Sorry..

MaryStrickland, the not a person button is on the bottom right and next to the report a transcription error, if I remember right. It is intended to be used for those vacant and not at home lines or perhaps where there is a note rather than a person.

In Family Review, You can click on Skip Household, Crossed Out, and the tool skip to the next record. In Name Review, you can click Transcription Error, Crossed Out, but the tool does NOT advance. Often the crossed out names are readable. Should we click UNSURE? Or enter the crossed out name fields?

Since there is no response, I will just hit "NOT A PERSON" after noting the cross out

So sorry that this is a late response. You can report the crossed out like you did. I'm not sure it advances. So, if you can read the crossed name, then you can go ahead and put that in the field. If you can't read it, then you can go ahead and click on Unsure. You can use the basic instructions for crossed out information that we use for regular indexing. I hope that this helps.

@AndLinda I am confused. My confusion deals with "name review". When one marks it as crossed out in the transaction error, it is impossible to type what you can see under the marked out, as it does advance to the next name. There is a delay in the "error recorded", but it advances to the next name.
We are teaching several classes at our center attempting to get several people involved. It would be helpful if we knew for sure which to do. Mark crossed out in the transaction error OR follow instructions for indexing?

@Janell Vasquez I am confused as to what to do with crossed out things. One place I see if says to report as crossed out... and another says to follow the indexing rules [index what you can see, the new information if it's readable; the crossed out information is nothing new was added; or mark as unreadable if you can't tell what was written there.] Not all of the indexing options are available in the review process.
1- What do you do with crossed out names in the "Name Review" for the names? Using the transcription button and then doing the "back" arrow seems like it would "undo" the transcription error as I saw listed on another posting.
2- What do you do with crossed out names in the "Families Review" for the names, places, anything else (except for the salary as noted- use the larger numbers originally listed in that case)? There isn't an option to do as in indexing and mark it unreadable, mark it as blank?
Plus a couple of more questions....
3- Additionally, it seems most of the house numbers were written in the bottom box of column 2 in the family review- should they be included in the house number box or in the apartment number box?
4- What is the house number in column two is more of a description like "1/2 m S & E"?
Are we basically to type what we can see in exactly the same column or line? [Yesterday it was clear the enumerator had written the sex in the place of the race and the race in the place of the sex. With a line down through all of the sex column.] I switched the information to match the correct boxes. Right or wrong?
Not trying to be so picky, but we are teaching several classes at our center and I'd like to share accurate information to those attending in our handouts.

@AndLinda Thank you so much! I will pass the information along as best I can. That is a very clear explanation. I would suggest it is added to the FAQ so others can more easily find it.
That's the other issue, I can not everything is within the FAQ or the Field Helps. If I don't search through the communities, the help index and even read through some of Facebook, it's difficult sometimes to get all of the correct information. And even then sometimes it's a little confusing as information isn't always the same because of comments by patrons or users, not just comments from the mod or FamilySearch employees.
Thanks again, that is a perfect explanation! It's a pleasure to assist with this project.

@Tamara Stevenson Thank you so very much for your patient persistence with this project. We share your frustration with efforts to find the correct answers to your questions and concerns. This project is still very much a "work in progress." Since there was no way to view the records before their release, it was not possible to anticipate many of problems that have been found and reported by conscientious folks like you. The Feedback and comments that you are submitting are a vital service as the program is refined.
