Unable to Access England and Wales 1871 census anymore.
Hello
I am unable to access certain 1871 census records for England/Wales, I have not had an issue in the past but the last twice I have looked for records for my family, they are not showing up even though I know there are records as I have found them on Ancestry.
I would like to find them as I want to attach them to my famioly which makes it easier to track them.
Other members have searched and found them and attached them to my famliy so they are there.
I do a broad search, also copy the information exactly as states on Ancestry records, but they do not show up, even though other records of 1871 do show up.
I have also noticed that the amount of 1871 records listed on FS is far lower than any other census records,
1871 last updated 15 Jul 2021 406,475 where as others are on average 1.496, 519 records
I have not had an issue in the past.
Could someone from the support missionaries e

I have been searching for ancestors in 1871 census, but no matter what I type in I can never find my ancestors and I know they are there. I just want to attach them.
I do a broad search with jus Born in Glamorgan or even leave the county out, but get loads of hits but none in Glamorgan. the number of records showing transcribed for me is jus over 400,000, where as the others are 1-2 million
Could someone please escalate it to an engineer or something to figure out why we cannot see them
I am not the only one who has an issue with this.
All I need to see is the transcribed records and not the actual pictres of the record. I would just like to tag my ancestors into them
If this question is similar to another one, then I posted a question yesterday but cannot find it now.
Thank you

Hi Julie
Would love to help you solve this issue,
Some basic information would help us in our search such as
- The name of the person.
- Where and when the person is born
- Any other information that will help in the search eg: Spouse or any children
- Where are you searching eg: FamilySearch Search records, or wiki or catalog?
Tip to help you find a previous post you could bookmark this question which is located in the top right of your question. Then under your profile the bookmarks are located. Profile is located on the top right
You could also use this site to see if the people you are searching for are listed.
It is free to search: https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_queries/new?locale=en
Look forward to hearing from you.
All the best

@JulieFeathers This is both interesting and confusing. You stated that on FamilySearch: "1871 last updated 15 Jul 2021 406,475 where as others are on average 1.496, 519 records"
Signed in to FamilySearch with a public account, we see England and Wales Census, 1871 in the Historical Records Collection as last updated 15 Jul 2021 and the record count is 9,950,062.
We are seeing quite a few posts about issues finding people in this particular census' index. And it is baffling us. We are not able to reproduce the issues. Perhaps you can provide some details that might help us get to the bottom of this. If there is a bug, we can report it to engineers. But, we have to be able to replicate it before we are permitted to report it. We searched with a public account 2 ways: using the Firefox browser on an iPad and using a Windows 10 computer and the Chrome browser. Searches seem to be working as expected in both instances.
Questions that might help us figure this one out:
- What kind of computer or mobile device are you using? What operating system?
- Are you using the web interface or the Family Tree mobile app?
- If you are using the web interface, what browser are you using?
- Have you confirmed that your browser is up to date?
- Have you cleared your temporary files/cookies/cache?
- Can you give us, step-by-step, how you are accessing the census and what your exact search terms are?
Sorry that you are having so much trouble. Hopefully we can collectively figure this out and get it working for you.

Hi Miriam
It is not just one issue, It is the whole issue of my searching the 1871 Wales census.
People living in Glamorgan where I am seaching for I cannot find, But I can see people form other parts of Wales.
I was also looking for someone in Liverpool 1871who was born in Wales but l could not find the index, someone , Amy , did find them for me and attached to my family, She has kindly done this 3 times for me.
I was just wondering why I am unable to find them when others can.
I try a specific search from records I have seen on Ancestry, and also a broad search, but my ancestors do not turn up for me.
I was just wondering if there was an issue with certain memebrs of the public not being able to find people, as it is only happening with the 1871 census

Yes,
This is the screen shot I have just take of what I see.
The 1871 census shows 406,475 records updated on 15th July
I am using my Laptop, and on Google Chrome.
and just signed to the FS online page
I will do another screen shot just to show what I see
As far as I am aware my browers is up to dat, it auto updates and I download them.
I do a search from my page usually like this I select Wales mostly. I type in the name of my ancestor, DOB usually 2 years either way. County born and them search.
From there I select the type of record I want to view, sometimes I add parents names or mothers maiden name. and slowly go through each record of Birth Marriage and death. and different census, but get stuck on 1871 census,
I see other people on 1871 but never mine, even though I know they are on the 1871 census records

Hi again Julie:
Interestingly, we went and did a search under Glamorgan, Wales in the FamilySearch catalog and nothing appears for 1871 census. See attached:
We also went to FamilySearch Wiki and again there is no listing.
See here:
I also have family in Glamorgan and as yet have not found them using FamilySearch census records but have found some using Find My Past as they have a good collection of the 1911 census records, which is when I was searching.
I am beginning to think that the 1871 Census for Glamorgan, Wales has some issue.
I have sent an email asking questions to this site: https://www.glamfhs.org.uk/ we will see what transpires.
For the record for John Readhead who is in England we found this record as follows.
Did a search using FamilySearch - Search - Then select Browse all publications, on the right under the map, then in the search field type England, then choose the 1871 census. We did a search just filling in John first name, Readhead in Last name field then Lincolnshire, England in the place field then left date blank, interestingly when we add the date of 1802 no records are found.
*remember* less is more.
Here is the result, you will need to sign in. This is signed in as a public person.
as in all records there can be glitches and some are found some are still being found.
In my 30 plus years of research I am still learning and finding issues that cannot be explained.
All the best
Miriam

Thank you Miriam,
Yes it is weird. There is a kind person on FS Facebook and she has found some of my relatives in 1871 Census West Glamorgan and has attached them for me.
Hopefully the issue will be resolved

Signed in on a public account I get 9,625,055 records, as at July 15, 2021 - using both Firefox and Chrome on my PC.
Still something is clearly wrong here - the figure should be around 20,000,000. I have requested previously that there should be liaison between someone at the Find My Past end and somebody at FamilySearch each time these census collections are updated. This sort of problem is not unusual - just very frustrating.
However, there seems to be a further problem in Julie's case, as her screenshot shows only a fraction of the numbers that should be displayed for all the England and Wales sets (1841-1911).

@JulieFeathers Want to keep folks up to date on this issue, since many seem interested in it. We have reported the search result discrepancies to our engineers. They have acknowledged that is it odd. They found that the permissions for some of the DGS (film) numbers within this collection are showing differently than others--which is not what we would expect. They are checking with those who manage permissions and contracts with record custodians to see what they can discover. We will update you when we learn more.
