Wrong info to my relatives changed by strangers
I have spent a lot of time entering family information on my tree. I have gone to great lengths to make sure it is correct. Although I haven't visited my tree on FamilySearch in a while, I noticed that others are going into my tree and changing information on individuals that is incorrect. They are relying on records found on the internet that may have the same name but are not the same person. For instance, my great uncle was born in the year 1921. Someone, (username Omen) went in and changed it to 1899. Someone else (janpeterson1) changed my great-grandmothers information all over the place. Public records are not always correct. Neither of these people contacted me to consult about the information. Is there a setting that needs to be selected so that not just any Joe or Josephine Schmo can go in and enter incorrect information? Please advise or I will delete my account, then no one will be able to find information about their relatives who might also be mine.
We understand the frustration that can occur when using a universal Family Tree. And you are correct, incorrect changes may be made when another contributor grabs onto a name thinking it is "their" relative, then keeping the name, they change the dates, places and other family members to meet their families criteria. It's like saying there can only be one person, in the whole United States, born anytime in the 1800's with the name of John Smith!.. Unfortunately the short answer to your question, is there a setting that can be set that can prevent changes--No. But you can be notified after the fact by using the Following feature.
As for deleting your account, then one will be able to find information about their relatives-- you may in fact delete your access to Family Search, but because it is a Universal tree, any information for deceased will still be on the tree. Another option is to use one of our partner sites, that may interface with Family Search, but on which not one can see your information or change it.
I is wisdom to look for the contact information for that particular program , then make the contact to make sure that program will fit your needs.
We genuinely understand and sympathize with your negative experiences for others making incorrect changes - but, and it does happen, someone finally adds that great, great ancestor you have look for for several years.
Also all contributions you make to the records of the deceased are gifts being offered to other users, and you are to be commended for those contributions.1
Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
I am just a 'lowly' User/Patron ...
Short Answer: NO, there is NOTHING one can set/select to STOP Others editing Deceased individuals/persons
Also, please be aware, that "Closing" your 'FamilySearch' Account, will NOT, "Delete"/"Remove", any of the "Deceased" individuals/person, in your "Ancestral" Lines, from "Family Tree"" of 'FamilySearch'.
You are not alone ...
Many of us have ... been there ...
That Said ...
Here an old 'standby' of mine, that I have previously proffered on occasion ...
Most new (and, some old) Users/Patrons DO NOT understand the basic 'nature' and 'premise' of "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', when they join in.
Please let me explain ...
We do not have our OWN "Tree" in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
We ONLY have "Branches" (ie. Ancestral" lines), that are interconnected, in this SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us, that is "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is NOT like 'On-Line' "Websites" (eg. "Ancestry_com"; or "MyHeritage_com"; or, the like); and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes (eg, the OLD, now no longer supported, "PAF"; or, "Ancestral Quest"; or, the like).
We DO NOT have "Private"/"Personal" 'Trees' in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' like other 'On-Line' "Websites"; and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes.
We do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, the "Deceased" individuals/persons in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
And, most importantly ...
We DO NOT even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, Our OWN "Deceased" Ancestors/Family/Relatives in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is built on a "Open Edit" Platform - hence, why any registered User/Patron can "Edit" (ie. Add, Delete; and/or, Change) ANY "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
I know that this does not help; but, I hope that this gives you some perspective.
Do not disappear ...
There are some, actions that one can take; and, options available ...
Here is a "Knowledge Article" in 'FamilySearch':
How can I prevent other people from making inaccurate changes to Family Tree?
After that ...
As you can 'see', "Collaboration" needs to be undertaken.
But, when "Collaboration" FAILS; and, provided that there is NO "Abuse" ...
And, here is another "Knowledge Article" in 'FamilySearch':
How do I report changes or problems made by other contributors?
comes to the fore ...
In particularly, the last sentence in that "Knowledge Article"; which, is very IMPORTANT:
If you have questions regarding inadvertent, suspicious or potentially malicious errors in records that you are unable to resolve per the instructions above, contact FamilySearch Support.
All that Said ...
IF, you have undertaken "Collaboration" with the particular User/Patron in question, causing concern; and, that "Collaboration" has FAILED; and, provided that there is NO "Abuse"; THEN, advise of such in HERE in THIS post of yours; and, HOPEFULLY, the "Moderators" [ie. 'FamilySearch' "Support" (Personnel)] HERE in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, can TAKE this MATTER directly into the workings of 'FamilySearch' "Support", to help/assist you (BEFORE, other 'well meaning' Users/Patrons get involved).
▬ You are not alone ...
▬ Most of us have ... been then ... done that ... and, still do.
I hope this helps somewhat.
