US, Virginia Marriage Record 1853-1935 batch M3WK-BJX
The husband's father is listed as Isaac & .... and then the husband's mother is listed as Letty Jackson. A lot of the names are listed this way. It seems the last name is really the husbands surname and the wife's name is listed with the husbands surname. Knowing that I am not to assume that, do I just write the mother's surname as Jackson and then do not list the father's surname?

Let me use a different example because on the that one the bride and groom had the same last name.
New example: The Groom is Edgar Emerson. Under the box: Names of their parents is a box called Husband. Listed under that category is Alex &. Listed under the box called Mother is Elizabeth Emerson.
I am assuming that Alex is Alex Emerson. Not sure if I am allowed to type Emerson for Alex's surname because the surname is not actually typed in his box, it only shows Alex & in his box.

@colleenannettehodge1, if you have already submitted the batch in your question, you need to share another batch to get an accurate answer. I still can't open the one you gave - maybe @Dellory Matthews or someone else can.
In the meantime, the Project Instructions have three examples. The first one uses a 4 column system where the groom's mother and the bride's father do not have surnames indexed. The second one uses a 4 column system where every parent has a different surname indexed. The third example uses a 2 column system where the parents names are J.C. & A. Hudson and both parents are indexed with the surname of Hudson.
For new indexers: Project instructions can always be accessed by clicking on the last icon in the tool bar.
Hope this is helpful.

You have mixture of situations from each of the examples.
On the first two where there is no ampersand, I would not index a surname for Joseph or Bailey. We just don't know what their surname is.
On the next one, all four parents have a different surname.
When it has an ampersand like Alex & Elizabeth Emerson the husband and wife both share the surname of Emerson.
The next one all 4 parents have different surnames.
On the next line, Rebecca would not have a surname indexed.
And so on.

I can't open the batch, but, I do work on this project. If the parent's names are written as Isaac & Letty Jackson, then both of them would have the same surname of Jackson. Is the husband's (groom) surname also Jackson?
