    Hello barbarapiilanijohnson1

Welcome to the FamilySearch community, and thank you for your question regarding a (?) for a name.

Why does a person's name have a question mark in Family Tree?

On 27 June 2016, our systems added a question mark to the name field of any person whose first and last names were blank. You can change a question mark to the correct name if you know it. Otherwise, leave it as a placeholder until you discover the correct name.

    Think twice before you delete

Be careful about deleting any relationships where one person is related to another person whose name is represented by a question mark. The question mark could be the result of a merge or some other action that, for now, has removed the name. In time, you or another patron may be able to supply the missing information.

You should merge ? when possible.

I hope that we understood and provided information that answers your question. Thank you for using Community and we hope this link or the Help Centre provides the answers you seek.

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

Short Answer: You DO NOT have to "Delete" the "Relationship".

    You can SIMPLY just, "Merge"/"Combine", that individual/person ? ( 47VL-M2J ), into the individual/person Kapahu Kuololia HOOHUA ( KZM9-3FH ), with the latter; as, the "Surviving" individual/person.

Here are some a "Knowledge Articles" in 'FamilySearch'':

Thank you for asking your question in Community. Below is a link to an article found in the Help Center of FamilySearch. If you follow the steps in the article, you can remove the incorrect spouse, or in this case, the "?"

If you need further help with this issue, please let us know. Best wishes as you continue correcting your Family Tree.

I'm not FamilySearch so can offer advice:

47VL-M2J has been like that since the great import in 2012, so if the historical record says Koki had only one wife then 47VL-M2J should be merged into KZM9-3FH Kapahu Kuololia Hoohua.

I believe this situation existed well before 2016. Also, how could it have been possible for the system to add "a question mark to the name field of any person whose first and last names were blank"? A person whose first and last names are blank in Family Tree surely cannot have had an ID?

I can understand how "?" IDs were created prior to 2012 - where, say, the children of a John Smith each have a different "?" ID as their mother, but can somebody explain the way this worked in 2016.

I have a number of male IDs that I added prior to 2016, with children - but no mother - attached. No "?" IDs appear to have been created to fill the blank spaces, so can someone please explain what is being talked about here?
