Location in Quebec Prov. (Current and Historical) and Historical Acadia
Hello Lovely People.
Hopefully, you understand that this is not written with a complaining tone, but rather a very eager to help and a tad frustrated I am stunted in doing so.
I was trying to help and volunteer into correcting the location names. That has been a constant frustration of mine with every genealogical tree. Everywhere I go, people are not naming places I know how they properly should be, whether they exist or not. I am bit of a fanatic on this. And itès frustrating to see like 6 different entries for one single entity that did not change of region, let alone of province or of country.
Anyway, in many cases, I was unable to fix the places on the batch because even the choices offer to fix are not standardized.
I still want to help and i have time currently and the knowledge to do so. I just need to be told how we decide to fix this mess... are we resolving to
Alt #1: Name of Town (at time of document), Province long form not abbreviated, Canada
Alt #2: Name of town (At time of document), Region (Political, cultural, parish or geographic at time of document as these changes...which one do you want? Currently you have of all!), Province long form not abbreviated, Canada
The current tool does not allow to fix this. It gives you a drop down menu that gives alternative created before. And the right name sometimes is there, sometimes it is not.
Example from my current province of Saskatchewan. Moosejaw. It give the RM number. There is actually a town named: Moosejaw. I should be able to enter it as Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, Canada AND the RM. Not just the RM. (Rural municipality)
Example with Leeds, Quebec, Canada that is Saint-Jacques de Leeds. But I could not correct it that way. (source:https://www.saintjacquesdeleeds.ca/) ... all the options listed Leeds, Megantic, Quebec, Canada. Even though Leeds is historically correct too up to a certain date... what would it be in that case.
Option 1(geographc): Leeds, Chaudière-Appalaches, Québec, Canada (Never changed)
Option 2 (RCM):Leeds, Les Appalaches, Québec, Canada
Option 3 (Federal Riding) : Leeds, Mégantic—L'Érable, Québec Canada
Option 4 (Provincial): Leeds, Lotbinière-Frontenac, Québec, Canada
Option 5: Leeds, Québec, Canada
Option 6: I do not know the catholic parish, but it is conceivable that someone would list it also with that option.
Option 7: Spelling. The matter of accent
Optiion 8: "-" versus spaces.... Saint-Jacques De Leeds or Saint-Jacques-De-Leeds?
Option 9 : St. vs Saint(e) and St-, Ste- , Ste
Option 10: Current agglomerations versus historical entity.Leeds or Saint-Jacques De Leeds
Option 11 to infinity: A mix of the above options.
It's not too bad when it is a huge city like Montreal that is ancient, never change that often since creation. Other entity ... when entering location, you can have anything from 2 options to infinity existing... as many options that are divided unless someone knows it's the same place. (And I know...but I can't find where I can merge them.)
Currently, it is a bit of everything and it's mind-boggling and I have ll the tool and knowledge to fix that from here. I just donèt know how I can share my expertise properly so it benefit the community rather than making people feels like I show them up😉. I just want to help.
I want to focus on my birth province and Acadia because I am firm in this niche and i can do it in both official languages. I know about France and Saskatchewan, but that can already be a mammoth task I will not be able to finish even if I start. (Because hopefully I will eventually find pay work after Covid)
Anything I can do with my knowledge?
THank you

Dear @IRow
It is difficult to understand if you are indexing or if you are doing the activity that lets you volunteer to correct places in the Family Tree by choosing a standard from the list. So, I will provide two different answers and you can follow up with a comment...
A) If you are volunteering to correct places and you cannot find a good choice on the list of standard places, please just use the "Skip" option for that one. Then...you can use the following article to suggest places that need to be added to the list of standard places.
B) If you are Indexing, please type what you see, even if it is not on the drop-down list that appears. This article will describe how to index places.
Thank you for your good work. Best wishes to you!
