how often does Family Search Time out

Hi @David Ralph Schreiter. We understand your concern about being "timed out" when working at FamilySearch, especially if you are using two-step verification to access your account.
Generally, if your browser page is inactive for any length of time, you can be timed-out. As far as I have been able to tell, there is not a designated about of time before you will be timed-out, but if you wish to try to remain logged in you may want to develop the habit of going back to FamilySearch.org often to remain active at the site. Some users have indicated that checking the "stay logged in two weeks" box does not keep them logged in for two weeks, but it does immediately bring them back into FamilySearch if they have been timed out due to inactivity. You can certainly experiment with this across the browsers that you use.
While this is not a specific answer to your question, we hope this suggestion will be useful.
