Age at death entry
UK, England, Northumberland—Nonconformist Church Records, 1613–1920 [Part B][MSPD-2FP]
Hello again. I have read that a person in their [say] 90th year is actually only 89. Is that true?
So when an age at death is recorded "in her 68th year" do I enter 67 or 68?
Thanks in advance, Jane

Dear JaneAdams_5,
I want to agree with you. A child that is in its first year is not yet 1 year old, so I would want to round down. HOWEVER, I did consult with the FamilySearch Indexing supervisors and they took me to the General Indexing Guidelines: "For events except births that include a date range, such as “between February 2 and March 9, 1937,” type the most recent or latest date in the range. For this example, type the month as Mar, the day as 9, and the year as 1937."
So, according to our directions, please use the most recent year (68 if she is in her 68th year) just to be sure we are following the guidelines.
I noticed that there are many entries like this on this batch. Please use the year indicated rather than rounding down.
Thanks for indexing!

Thank you for your reply. I had read the directions and understood what they were saying, but this type of aging seemed rather different I thought. Perhaps I'm making too much out of it. At any rate, I'll use the age as shown and the descendant can do the rest.
Indexing is keeping my mind occupied and sharper. At the ancient age of 90 (I'm in my 91st year, [ha]) indexing is something I look forward to each day.
I so appreciate the help I've received on Community Help.

Jane,
you ae an amazing lady. If I am still indexing at 90 I will be a very happy indexer. Yes it does keep our minds sharp, even if it is to decipher someone's hand writing and find another name. We are the hands of our ancestors and it is a privilege to help.
Happy indexing with many more years to go.

How nice of you to share those kind sentiments. As frustrating as indexing can be at times it is still where I go first thing in the morning --- well, right after feeding the dog (there are priorities, of course, especially in Sammy's mind. ) 😏
It is a privilege to be able to help with records. Knowing that someone in the future is going to find a piece of their puzzle gives me such good feelings. I do hope I have years ahead, but only our Good Lord knows how many. Until then I shall do what I can.
Thank you so much for your messages - they have made my day happier.
Jane
