Hi Richard. Yes, I think that you should index individuals who are employers for your type of batch (military tax forms), and more broadly, for any batch from this Project. See below.
I don’t work on this Project, and we may have been instructed NOT to index employers in other Tax Record Projects (I don’t recall for sure). But look at the two bulleted citations below from the “What To Remember About This Project” section of the Project Instructions for THIS Project.
The first bullet instructs us TO index employers in military tax forms, which your batch has. So that settles the question for your type of batch. But I think we can make a broader conclusion.
In the second bullet we’re instructed not to index companies, businesses, etc. But that same citation is silent about about not indexing individuals who happen to be employers.
So I believe that any individual who happens to be an employer should be indexed, even in non-military batches..
- If multiple names were recorded on a single line, or in multiple columns, create a separate entry for each name. Create separate entries for employers and freedmen on military tax forms.
- Do not index information for people listed in the remarks column, or the names of companies, businesses, organizations, or government entities. Businesses may be identified by an ampersand (&) between 2 surnames.

Yes, John and Richard, these names of employers should also be indexed:
In the Project Instructions, What to Remember about This Project, Bullet Point #5 you will find: "If multiple names were recorded on a single line, or in multiple columns, create a separate entry for each name. Create separate entries for employers and freedmen on military tax forms.
