Location of birth is listed as "not valid"

I have a birth certificate that shows that I was born in Hamlin Plantation, Me. This was in the northern part of Maine, close to the Canadian border. This town is now known as Hamlin, Maine. My family tree shows that location, but you list it as invalid. Why? My name is Joseph John Richard Ayotte. Several of my siblings were born there also. How do I get it listed as a valid birth location?

Hamlin Plantation just needs to be added to the Family Tree gazetteer. Before you submit the request, do a web search to find a good source that defines the scope of the name in space and time. Perhaps Wikipedia? What years was it Hamlin Plantation? What followed it. Are its boundaries the same as the boundaries of the extant town? Include these details in your request.

The basics can go on Wikipedia if not already there. The finer points can go on the FamilySearch research wiki.

On the Add/Edit Birth page is one place you can start your request:

    Hello Joe,

Have any of the suggestions helped you solve your problem? Adding a new place to the standardized list would be a great thing for you to do. The reason FamilySearch has standardized places is to "improve the accuracy and clarity for others who view the information that you enter. They also improve the accuracy of the search, record hints, and duplicates features of Family Tree."

Standard dates and place names also do nice things on the person timeline maps.
