Can't change birthplace location on drop down list.
Liberia—2008 Census [Part K]
[M3ZN-2KS]
Reviewing: trying to change a birthplace to a different location number, that is not in the drop down list. It will not save the change unless I select something from the drop down list or use "Unreadable" or "Blank".
Can't contact Family Search because it is Sunday.

UPDATE: The Birthplace field has been corrected for this project. It will now allow the indexer or reviewer to enter the code as recorded on the document. Thank you for your patience.

Hi Pauline. I believe that you should type what you see on the Record (see the Field Help below). And you can do that. If you are Reviewing You should be able to highlight the current value in that Field (with you mouse for example), type what you see on the Record, and then Tab instead of hitting Enter or Return. The new value you typed should remain. I don’t know that the drop-down if you are Indexing, just type the value you see on the Record, and hit Tab.
Here is the Field Help ( purple ?) for the Birthplace Field:
Select the numeric code and corresponding value from the drop-down list. If the numeric code cannot be found in the drop-down list, type the code as it was written, including any preceding zeros.

Hi, Pauline,
I'm having the same problem. It's never happened before with a Liberia Census batch. For now, as an indexer and as a reviewer, I'm sending back batches with birthplaces not in the dropdown (most with the birthplace "54") until the problem gets fixed. I considered marking them blank, but that would mean that a lot of data would be wrong. Hopefully, word gets to the right people soon.

Same issue with 04. Hitting tab doesn't allow it either

Cheryl Lynne Schleiss is correct, hitting tab does not work either. I've run into this problem indexing and reviewing.

Try clearing cache and cookies. It works for me using Chrome. Possibly try a different browser.

Same problem, with Birthplace 54. Was using a non-Chrome browser for this Batch. Signed out of that browser and reopened the Batch in Chrome. Never before used Chrome for FamilySearch, so there are zero cookies and cache.
Went to the Birthplace field. Typed 54. Hit Tab (navigate forward one field). Birthplace went empty.
Clicked again in Birthplace, typed 54 again, hit Shift-Tab (navigate back one field). Same result: Birthplace went empty.
Back to Birthplace, typed 54, hit Enter. The field recorded (automatically filled in, without me specifying it to do so) 03 (the first entry in the drop-down list).
Back to Birthplace, typed 54, hit Tab. 03 returned.
Created a new Entry (no fields entered). Went straight to Birthplace, tried the above steps, same results.
Back to Birthplace, typed Ctrl-B. Field correctly recorded <Blank>. Went back into it, typed 54, hit Tab. 03 returned.
Synopsis:
(a) If you type a value in Birthplace that is not in the drop-down list, then Tab out of it, the field will empty itself (nothing in it).
(b) If you type the same value and Enter out of it, the field will record the first value in the list.
(c) Once the field has recorded a value (such as in case (b)), any attempt to enter a non-drop-down-list value results in a list value being entered, i.e., you cannot make the field go empty again.
FURTHERMORE, and possibly related, if you click in the Birthplace field and type a value that DOES exist in the drop-down list, the entry does not follow your typing, and you HAVE to click on the entry to get it into the field, otherwise whatever entry is highlighted at that moment in the list will populate the field REGARDLESS of what you type, even if what you type is in the list. This has not been the case in the past in these Censuses - it has consistently, in the past, been that when you type a Birthplace number that IS in the list, the list follows your typing, and if you hit Enter, your choice will populate the list WITHOUT having to mouse-click it.
SO, at least two things have recently changed in the behavior of this field, and these are not cache or browser issues and must be fixed! Thanks!

All Batches in "Liberia—2008 Census [Part K]" - every Batch in this set has the identical problem. Furthermore, the field for Census County is similar to Birthplace, in that it provides a drop-down list of values - the same value set. However, Census County works correctly, i.e., the way it always has, in that it both follows what you type, and it allows you to enter a value that is not in the list. Birthplace used to work exactly like Census County, but it no longer does. Please revert Birthplace back to the same behavior as Census County.

It appears to be a problem with Part K of this Project, but not part J. I have a batch from each part, and overriding the dropdown options works for the Part J batch but not for the Part K batch. Moderator @annewandering is aware and should be checking with the Software Engineers on this.

We are being to told if the field will not accept the number you should try clearing cookies and cache. If the number still cannot be entered then you should blank the field.
ALL the mods are aware of the issue. I have no special in to the tech engineers. I am just another mod.

Response from our internal department re:Liberia—2008 Census [Part K] [M3ZN-2KS.
Were able to download a batch where "57", for example, could be manually entered in the Birthplace field. Since the project is nearly complete, please enter <blank> in the field so that the batch can be submitted.
Please follow to What to Remember about This Project, 2nd bullet point. The researcher will be able to see the document and see the reference to a birthplace if <blank> has been entered when indexing the batch.

Fair enough @annewandering. But if the mods see a pervasive problem, can we presume, without having to prompt them, that they elevate it to FS Support for the attention of the software engineers? It would be good to know, for example, that FS Support and/or the Project Managers are aware of a problem and are working on it, and as you did above, give us interim guidance on what to do until the problem is fixed. Thanks.

We usually become aware of pervasive issues very quickly and they are reported to the necessary people as soon as they is known. You can see that this problem showed up multiple times here on Community fairly quickly and it is an issue that affects only a small part of the indexing fields in one project. Imagine if it were affecting all the projects at once.

Got it.

Received answer from Family Search to just mark the field as "Blank". Those searching these records later can view the original document.

I just tried to go back and finish my batches that were open from this problem. It would not allow me to change it to "Blank". It just kept going back to wrong location code. Went and cleared all cookies from Family Search.org Refreshed and signed back in. Now it will let me mark the field as "Blank".

*** Please either hold or return these batches on the Liberia—2008 Census [Part K]. We will post here when we have an answer as to how to proceed. This issue is still being worked on. Thank you for your patience in this matter. ***
