How can I see a book with "Protected" copyright?
If I'm interested in seeing a book on books.familysearch.org, but it shows as "Protected" copyright, would I be able to view this book digitally if I went to a Family History Centre? What about seeing it digitally if I went to the Family History Library in SLC? If it's no to both of these then I guess I'd need to request the book be available for viewing prior to going to the FHL?

Thank you for the response, we looked at the Title you provided and there is a copyright protection on it.
Please note the following regarding copyright.
Many materials used in family history research are protected by copyright laws. Unless you created an item, it is best to assume that it is protected by copyright law. Once you can verify you have legal permission, you can make copies or upload the information. Be sure to ask permission first.
The fact that a publication is out of print does not nullify its copyright. This means you cannot justify duplicating, distributing, performing, displaying, or making derivatives of it without permission.
- If you are at the Family History Library or family history center, you can make copies as permitted by local copyright law.
- As you use FamilySearch, review our Content Submission Agreement before you upload photos, stories, source documents, and other materials.
Please note the following regarding those records marked Off-site storage.
- Off-site storage means that the item is in storage away from the library for various reasons. We cannot retrieve off-site storage books for public use.
We trust these explanations do not hinder your research.

Sent the guest a request for the Title and author of the book.

Depending on the restrictions imposed by the copyright holder, you may be able to see the book at an affiliate library or at an FHC. Impossible to say without knowing which book.

I'm asking this because of the many books which say "Protected" as their Access Level, but one for example is:
"Tangled roots : descendants of John Bishop (1709-1785) of Horton, Nova Scotia, a New England planter family"
which in the Books Digital Library shows here:
And in the FS Catalog is here:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/540293?availability=Family%20History%20Library
Two of the four volumes are "Not Available" and two are off-site storage at the FHL.
- Can I see any of these digitally at an FHC?
- If not, can I see any of these digitally at the FHL in SLC?
- If not, can I request that the two off-site books be available for on-site viewing prior to a trip?
Thanks.

Just to be clear then, the answers to my questions 1 & 2 sound like "no"? For my question #3 I'm confused then about why there is an off-site book order form:
here: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Family_History_Library_Off-site_Storage_Book_Orders
and here: FHL Off-site Storage Book Order
So just wondering if off-site books are orderable, or not?

@npc001 Have you tried the new (since 24 May) lookup service? Staff in SLC will email you copies of certain pages or index entries from books that are not available.
https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/library-lookup-service-fhl/
The 2nd page of the request form is specifically for books.

I just checked the title in Worldcat.org, and my library has the book. I have not yet been back to my library, but I'm hoping to get there soon. It is open.
If I can help, I'll be happy to try.

Thanks @MADonnelly - it's not just one book, I have several dozen books that I'd like to look at, but am not sure yet if I need any lookups - sometimes you just don't know until you look at the book :)
I'll be going to SLC in the fall with my list of books and in preparation want to know if I can see the books digitally at the FHL, and if I can't (and they're listed as "Off-site") whether I need to do the off-site request in preparation for my trip. I can of course look at books that are on the shelves. It would be very disappointing to arrive at the library and find out that there's no way to access the off-site books at all in any format.
Thanks for any information you're able to provide!

I understand. You can certainly use the free lookup service to ask for the appropriate name index of the books to help prepare for your trip.
Many of the digitized books are available online when I am at my local library. My library was one of the original Beta test sites for the affiliate library program. If they are available at an affiliate then they are definitely available in digital format in SLC.
If you want to send me your list - private message may be better - and I will be happy to check and let you know which ones are available in digital format at my library. That should help clarify what you can see.

I have the same issue. I am looking for a book about Bowman genealogy. I get thousands of results, but as I page through them I see many are “protected”. Since I can’t see them, I would prefer to just filter them out. And like npc110, I don’t know which book I want until I look at the index, or location or years.

@Susan Kayl You have the option to filter out books to which you do not have access. On the left side, select access level to select the options -
